Horizon Postdoctoral Fellowships

The goal of the Abundant Intelligences research program is to develop novel approaches to creating intelligent machine systems that can support Indigenous flourishing. This includes research on how such systems can be conceptualized, designed, implemented and deployed to serve Indigenous communities in particular and, more generally, support alternative epistemological foundations for them. The program builds on preliminary research conducted by the Indigenous Protocol and AI Workshops, in particular the Position Paper published in summer 2020. The Fellow will be part of several vibrant and innovative Concordia-based research communities, including the Initiative for Indigenous Futures Partnership, the Indigenous Futures Research Centre, and the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology.

This is an interdisciplinary research program. As such we are interested in candidates from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds spanning the arts, humanities and social sciences, engineering, and sciences. The research will include one or more of the following:

1. Collaborate with Indigenous communities to imagine A.I. systems designed from Indigenous epistemologies and with Indigenous protocols;
2. Partner with existing creators of intelligent machine systems to devise new approaches to implementing and deploying them;
3. Work on programs to increase engineering and design capacity within Indigenous communities such that Indigenous people can begin to build such systems themselves; and
   
4. Map out a robust and adequately financed development path from research to deployment to make it possibly for Indigenous communities to specify, develop, and use such systems.

PhD in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Science and Technology Studies, History of Science, Anthropology, Sociology, History, Critical Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies/Politics/Governance, Indigenous arts and design, or any other domain that engages critically with research, development and/or deployment of digital technologies.

Horizon position must start their appointment by August 31, 2022.
