Student Well-being Project

Stress is inevitable, and not all stress is alike.

During university, students experience periods of both “good stress” and “bad stress” as they navigate positive changes and the challenges of balancing academic demands with life outside the classroom.

To learn more about these patterns, the Student Well-being Project aims to map Concordia students’ stress over the course of one academic year.

Over the course of one academic year, participants will be asked to complete several online surveys: longer surveys at the start and end of each semester and very brief surveys bi-weekly. Individuals will be compensated $90 if they complete all surveys.

Your participation in this research will help us support future students in managing their stress by informing Concordia and other univerities how to proactively reduce or prevent negative outcomes associated with student stress.

The goals of this project are:

Identify specific points in the academic year when students experience elevated academic stress and may be in need of particular support services

While we often assume that students experience the most stress during the midterm and final exam periods, our research will examine whether there are other points in the academic year when students experience excessive stress.

For example, it is possible that some students experience the most stress when they return to school after the summer or winter break as they attempt to re-acclimate to an academic environment.

Identify who experiences more or less stress across the year

Our second goal is to understand who experiences which patterns of stress. It might be that some students find the start of the academic year more stressful than others whereas other students find final exam periods the most stressful.

We aim to recruit a representative sample of Concordia students, including smaller subgroups (e.g., student athletes, international students, BIPOC students, LGBTQ+ students) to ensure that the experiences of all Concordia students are represented.
