TAKING HEALTH CARE INNOVATION TO
NEW HEIGHTS
By applying innovative approaches to the development of cutting edge medical technologies, it is possible to address a full continuum of
issues and interventions across the health sciences.
From advancements in the operating room to making drugs more accessible, researchers are working together to change the face of health care for the better.
Developing faster and less invasive surgical procedures
Surgeons routinely have to navigate complex, three-dimensional spaces to reach an area requiring medical attention, without damaging vital tissue, nerves or organs.
By incorporating technologies such as 3D visualization and applied artificial intelligence, researchers are combining their interdisciplinary expertise to make surgery safer and less invasive. Recent advances include highlighting blood vessel systems through projection mapping and using machine learning for breast reconstruction.
Revolutionizing patient care with automation
Experts are using automation and miniaturization to develop a system that identifies cancer-causing genes and replaces the DNA with a healthier one. By fighting the disease on a micro level, researchers can now approach patient care based on an individual’s genetic makeup.
In the near future, they’ll be able to develop personalized treatment platforms that can be set up easily in any lab or hospital.
Using novel approaches to expedite drug development
Synthetic biology is helping to solve some of the world’s most pressing drug manufacturing problems. Researchers at Concordia have been using yeast-based platforms to produce rare molecules in large quantities — thus providing a way to make pharmaceuticals more accessible and affordable. These advanced techniques could ultimately lead to a future where drugs, that were once difficult and cost prohibitive to manufacture, can be produced at scale.
Collaborating in new facilities
Concordia’s state-of-the-art facilities include the new $62-million Applied Science Hub. Situated at the university’s Loyola Campus, the centre is equipped with a high-pressure thermogravimetric analyzer and other key equipment that make research more competitive. And thanks to its increased lab and office space, Concordia is now hiring more faculty to advance cross-disciplinary research.
By pushing the boundaries of medical innovation, Concordia is helping to build a smarter, healthier future for all.
