INDIGENOUS APPROACHES CAN HUMANIZE AI

When it comes to artificial intelligence, Indigenous epistemologies can help to develop our imaginations, frameworks and languages, to transform our understanding of what it means to be intelligent — and more importantly — what it means to be human.

Indigenous knowledges will better equip all of us to adapt to both the challenges and benefits of AI.

AI technology has enormous potential for helping us to better understand and interact with our world. But despite the promise of this emerging technology, serious flaws in designing, developing and deploying ethical AI systems exist.

These flaws often make AI system scientists and engineers blind to vital aspects of human existence, such as trust, care, and community — aspects that are fundamental to a comprehensive understanding of intelligence.

Rethinking the relationship between AI and humanity

Jason Edward Lewis is an award-winning researcher at Concordia University

Concordia researcher Jason Edward Lewis, who also holds the Research Chair in Computational Media and the Indigenous Future Imaginary, is working to incorporate Indigenous knowledges into the development and design of AI technologies.

A digital media theorist, poet, and software designer, Lewis founded Obx Laboratory for Experimental Media, where he conducts research/creation projects exploring computation as a creative and cultural material.

As an authority in the field of AI and indigeneity, Lewis was the lead author on the award-winning “Making Kin with the Machines” essay and editor of the ground-breaking Indigenous Protocol and Artificial Intelligence Position Paper.

He also works as director of the Initiative for Indigenous Futures, and co-director roles with the Indigenous Futures Research Centre, the Indigenous Protocol and AI Workshops, the Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace research network, and the Skins Workshops on Aboriginal Storytelling and Video Game Design.
