The 6th meeting of the International Society for Metal Music Studies (ISMMS), hosted by Concordia University, wrapped up on Friday, June 9 with a performance by the No Outsides Band, fronted by CSLP members Vivek Venkatesh, Owen Chapman, and Annabelle Brault.
The four-day conference brought together researchers of metal music from across disciplines and around the world to explore a variety of research topics gathered around themes of boundaries, otherness, and gatekeeping both within and without the metal music scene.

Prior to the ISMMS conference getting underway, organizer Vivek Venkatesh held a graduate Summer Institute, organized in collaboration with the CSLP, that coincided with the conference entitled No Outsides: Underground Arts as a Catalyst for Pluralism in an Era of Polarization. William Lindsay talks Rez Dog Blues & The Haiku and his experiences growing up Indigenous in a post-residential schools world
The conference got underway on Tuesday, June 6, with an (off)keynote address by author William Lindsay, former head of Indigenous Directions at Concordia, who discussed his book Rez Dog Blues & The Haiku: A Savage Life in Bits and Pieces and explored themes of the “Indigenous outsider”, punk and metal as the soundtrack to a life on the street, and what it meant to the author’s street-savvy generation, as well as Indigenous interpretations and applications of such music.

Later in the day, a roundtable discussion was held on identities in metal music featuring Nelson Varas-Dias, Leila Abdul-Rauf and Dan Butler, chaired by Nykkie Lugosi. The conversation between scholars, filmmakers and musicians explored themes that critically engaged tensions between cultural appreciation and appropriation, between the conscious and unconscious reproduction of stereotypes, and the possibility, but also limits, of understanding metal as a non-conformist counter-cultural site of resistance.

The day ended with a film screening of the documentary Stepping into Halka. The film records the experiences of a team of three teenage filmmakers documenting the Halka music and art installation that took place in 2023 (see our coverage). After the screening, the novice filmmakers joined project lead Veronica Mockler on stage for an entertaining discussion.

The second day of the ISSMS conference got started with a pair of partial film screenings, as Vivek Venkatesh showed a clip from his in-production documentary, Enslaved 25, about the Norwegian metal band, Enslaved, and Nelson Varas-Dias showed a portion of his ongoing documentary Acts of Resistance: Heavy Metal Music in Latina America, showing a portion related to Guatemala. Following the clips, the two filmmakers took part in a discussion moderated by Jason Wallin.
Throughout the day, as participants attended paper sessions, they could also tune into the No Outsides Polymorphous Radio Station, a pirate radio signal broadcasting from Concordia’s 4th Space courtesy of student Angus Tarnawsky.

The last event of the day was the second off(keynote) of the conference, where artist Maria Chávez offered The Topography of Sound: From PVC to Marble, a discussion of her sono-sculptural work and inspirations. Chávez then invited the students participating in the No Outsides Summer Institute up on stage with her for a live performance, playing and scratching broken records from a workshop the previous day.

Thursday got started with a roundtable discussion in the De Seve Cinema focused on teaching metal music studies or employing metal in pedagogical approaches to other disciplines. The themes discussed included how metal is a pedagogical tool to help students question who owns texts, how to teach interpretation and criticism of primary and secondary historical sources, how to contextualize metal within a music theory course, or to examine the history of the music and culture, and to locate and analyze metal studies and culture as the “other” in society.
The last day of the conference opened with an intimate workshop by Leila Abdul-Rauf and Dan Butler of the Bay area death metal band Vastum, who discussed vocalization in death metal and led an entertaining and emotional workshop on screaming and growling.
The conference then wrapped up with one last performance by the No Outsides band.
The successful No Outsides: Metal in an Era of Contagion conference would not have been possible without the dedicated year-long work of the planning committee: Vivek Venkatesh, Jessie Beier, Maya Detière-Venkatesh, Kathryn Urbaniak, Safia Boufalaas, Owen Chapman, José Cortés, Brad Nelson, and Jason Wallin, along with ISMMS liaison Nelson Varas-Díaz.

La 6e réunion de l'International Society for Metal Music Studies (ISSMS), organisée par l'Université Concordia, s'est terminée le vendredi 9 juin par une prestation endiablée du No Outsides Band, dont les membres du CEAP sont Vivek Venkatesh, Owen Chapman et Annabelle Brault. La conférence de quatre jours a rassemblé des chercheur.euses en musique métal de toutes les disciplines et du monde entier pour explorer une variété de sujets de recherche rassemblés autour des thèmes des frontières, de l'altérité et du contrôle à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de la scène de la musique métal.

La conférence a débuté le mardi 6 juin par un discours (off)keynote de l'auteur William Lindsay, ancien chef du département Indigenous Directions à Concordia, qui a parlé de son livre Rez Dog Blues & The Haiku : A Savage Life in Bits and Pieces et a exploré les thèmes de "l'étranger indigène", du punk et du métal comme bande sonore d'une vie dans la rue, et ce que cela signifiait pour la génération de l'auteur qui connaissait la rue, ainsi que les interprétations et les applications indigènes de cette musique.
Plus tard dans la journée, une table ronde a été organisée sur les identités dans la musique métal avec Nelson Varas-Dias, Leila Abdul-Rauf et Dan Butler, sous la présidence de Nykkie Lugosi. La conversation entre universitaires, cinéastes et musician.nes a exploré des thèmes qui ont mis en évidence les tensions entre l'appréciation culturelle et l'appropriation, entre la reproduction consciente et inconsciente des stéréotypes, et la possibilité, mais aussi les limites, de comprendre le métal comme un site de résistance contre-culturelle non conformiste.
La journée s'est terminée par la projection du documentaire Stepping into Halka. Ce film retrace les expériences d'une équipe de trois cinéastes adolescentes qui ont documenté l'installation musicale et artistique Halka qui s'est déroulée en 2023 (voir notre reportage). Après la projection, les cinéastes débutants ont rejoint Veronica Mockler, responsable du projet, sur scène pour une discussion divertissante.
La deuxième journée de la conférence ISSMS a débuté par deux projections partielles de films : Vivek Venkatesh a montré un extrait de son documentaire en cours de production, Enslaved 25, sur le groupe de métal norvégien Enslaved, et Nelson Varas-Dias a montré une partie de son documentaire en cours, Acts of Resistance : Heavy Metal Music in Latina America, dont une partie concerne le Guatemala. Après les clips, les deux réalisateurs ont pris part à une discussion animée par Jason Wallin.
Tout au long de la journée, alors que les participant.es assistaient aux séances de travail, ils pouvaient également écouter la station de radio No Outsides Polymorphous, un signal radio pirate diffusé depuis le 4e espace de Concordia.
Le dernier événement de la journée a été le deuxième off(keynote) de la conférence, au cours duquel l'artiste Maria Chávez a présenté The Topography of Sound : From PVC to Marble, une discussion sur son travail sono-sculptural et ses inspirations. Mme Chávez a ensuite invité les étudiant.es participant à l'institut d'été No Outsides à monter sur scène avec elle pour une performance en direct, jouant et grattant des disques cassés lors d'un atelier organisé la veille.
La journée de jeudi a débuté par une table ronde dans le cinéma De Seve, consacrée à l'enseignement des études musicales sur le métal ou à l'utilisation du métal dans les approches pédagogiques d'autres disciplines. Les thèmes abordés comprenaient la façon dont le métal est un outil pédagogique pour aider les étudiants à se demander à qui appartiennent les textes, comment enseigner l'interprétation et la critique des sources historiques primaires et secondaires, comment contextualiser le métal dans un cours de théorie musicale, ou examiner l'histoire de la musique et de la culture, et localiser et analyser les études et la culture du métal en tant que "l'autre" dans la société.
L'assemblée générale annuelle de l'International Society for Metal Music Studies a occupé le reste de l'après-midi, puis la journée s'est terminée par une performance collaborative et improvisée du groupe No Outsides (avec les membres du CEAP Vivek Venkatesh, Owen Chapman et Annabelle Brault).
Le dernier jour de la conférence s'est ouvert sur un atelier intime animé par Leila Abdul-Rauf et Dan Butler du groupe de death metal de la baie de San Francisco, Vastum, qui ont discuté de la vocalisation dans le death metal et animé un atelier divertissant et émouvant sur les cris et les grognements.
La conférence s'est ensuite achevée par une dernière prestation du groupe No Outsides.
Le succès de la conférence No Outsides : Metal in an Era of Contagion n'aurait pas été possible sans le travail dévoué du comité de planification pendant toute une année : Vivek Venkatesh, Jessie Beier, Maya Detière-Venkatesh, Kathryn Urbaniak, Safia Boufalaas, Owen Chapman, José Cortés, Brad Nelson et Jason Wallin, ainsi que Nelson Varas-Díaz, chargé de liaison avec l'ISMMS.
