Dr. Jessie Beier joins that latest installment of the CSLP Speaker Series on Wednesday, March 8, at 4pm in the Research-Creation space of the CSLP, for a performance-lecture that will examine the way in which end of the world thinking has come to define and delimit pedagogical approaches to grappling with the material and conceptual ends that might otherwise provoke important questions about education and its futures.

Beier’s talk will provide a glimpse into the speculative studies through which she has developed what she terms a weird pedagogy: an experimental (albeit always insufficient) pedagogical anti-model, a fabulated programme for the unprogrammable that seeks to problematize, and ultimately counter-actualize, potentials of and for pedagogy at the (so-called) end of the world.
Importantly, these strange studies of educational futurity move beyond just analysis and critique of the epistemic constraints and conceptual affordances that have come to condition pedagogical possibility. By putting (apparent) educational givens in contact with a range of seemingly alien objects, transversal theories and strange examples — namely the computational imaging of a black hole, the derivative recalibrations of speculative finance, and the un/scripted realities of reality TV — Beier will propose a series of weird pedagogical orientations that aim to reframe and reorient both the educational problems and solutions raised by today’s “end times” scenarios.
Dr. Jessie Beier is a teacher, artist, writer and conjurer of weird pedagogies for unthought futures. Working at the intersection of philosophy, artistic (non)production, and radical pedagogy, Beier’s research-creation practice experiments with developing ecological dissensus and heretical forms of pedagogy aimed at collective practices of negation, refusal and fabulation. Beier is currently a Horizon Postdoctoral Fellow at Concordia University (Montreal), an artist-researcher with Speculative Energy Futures (University of Alberta), co-editor of Ahuman Pedagogy: Multidisciplinary Perspectives for Education in the Anthropocene (Palgrave MacMillan, 2022) and author of the forthcoming book Pedagogy at the End of the World: Weird Pedagogies for Unthought Educational Futures (Palgrave MacMillan, 2023). La conférence de Dre. Beier donnera un aperçu des études spéculatives par lesquelles elle a développé ce qu'elle appelle une pédagogie étrange : un anti-modèle pédagogique expérimental (bien que toujours insuffisant), un programme fabulé pour l'improgrammable qui cherche à problématiser, et finalement à contre-actualiser, les potentiels de et pour la pédagogie à la (soi-disant) fin du monde.
Il est important de noter que ces étranges études sur la prospective de l'éducation vont au-delà de la simple analyse et critique des contraintes épistémiques et des possibilités conceptuelles qui ont conditionné la possibilité pédagogique. En mettant les données éducatives (apparentes) en contact avec une série d'objets apparemment étrangers, de théories transversales et d'exemples étranges - à savoir l'imagerie informatique d'un trou noir, les recalibrages dérivés de la finance spéculative et les réalités non scénarisées de la télé-réalité - Jessie Beier proposera une série d'orientations pédagogiques étranges visant à recadrer et à réorienter à la fois les problèmes et les solutions éducatives soulevés par les scénarios actuels de "fin des temps".
Jessie Beier est une enseignante, une artiste, une écrivaine et une magicienne des pédagogies bizarres pour des futurs impensés.
