Emanuel Sharma

2019-2020 Dean's List Award Winner — Computer Science

About Emanuel

Emanuel Sharma is a computer science student and a member of Concordia’s Institute for Co-operative Education. Emanuel has learned a great deal both in and out of school. At school, Emanuel has won numerous awards and made the top tier of the Dean’s List three years in a row. Outside of school, Emanuel has completed four internships. He’s been given the opportunity to work as a data scientist, a gameplay programmer, a computer vision engineer and a software developer. At home, he has had several side projects, each more ambitious than the last, exploring computer networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence and more.

His one piece of advice for peers...

Make your own way. These are the things that worked for me, but I didn’t discover them in point form. Be honest and find what works best for you; it takes all kinds.

Three keys to his academic success

  • Be humble. Never assume that you have all of the answers. Have an open mind, take advantage of the learning opportunities that are presented to you and never shy away from digging beyond the lecture notes. Knowing the formulas isn’t enough! You need to understand them.
  • Be ambitious. Find the things that you could improve and seek out the resources to do so. Reach for the spaces where your skills and your interests collide. Take hard classes, apply for internships, get involved in extracurriculars, make friends and network. Strive to be a better you and make your prior self proud!
  • Be accountable. Nobody has better tools or motivation to help you than yourself. Stay healthy, stay focused and find what works for you.

Two study tips

  • Stay ahead. This one is obvious but often forgotten. Deadlines pile up fast. Keep ahead of them for better results and greater peace of mind.
  • Go beyond the course material. University courses build on top of each other like a building. Understanding the course material lays a solid foundation for what’s to come. Try to apply the things that you’ve learned or explain them to friends. If you find that there are unanswered questions, answer them. It’ll pay in dividends down the road.

Emanuel's next big goal

I’ll be taking on my first professional role at Unity Technologies, here in Montreal!
