Cedric Martens

2019-2020 Dean's List Award Winner — Software engineering

About Cedric

Cedric just finished his third year in software engineering. He is the technical lead for Space Concordia’s Robotics Division and is working with a team of students to build an autonomous Martian rover to compete internationally against other universities. Cedric received an Undergraduate Student Research Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada for his work on skid-steer rovers with a Concordia professor. He has received several in-course scholarships, such as the Jaan Saber, Phoivos Ziogas Memorial Scholarship, DRW Scholarship in Software Engineering and Bourse d’Excellence for Engineering.

His one piece of advice for peers...

Join a student association that works on projects related to your program. It will allow you to make friends and complement your education by doing hands-on work.

Three keys to his academic success

  • Submitting assignments as soon as possible creates significantly less stress.
  • Reading the textbook is quite helpful in many courses.
  • While adding considerable work, joining Space Concordia was one of the best decisions I have made. It forced me to have an even stronger work ethic and gave me so many opportunities.

Two study tips

  • Sleep is better than coffee.
  • Get into the habit of doing schoolwork daily — it will greatly reduce the cramming you will have to do.

Cedrics's next big goal

I plan to continue my studies by completing a master’s degree.
