About the host organization
Montreal Steppers is a performance collective and non-profit organization committed to the art form of step – a black diasporic dance that uses the body as an instrument to create rhythms and beats, through stomps, claps, and chants.
Founded in 2019, the organization has used stepping to influence dialogue around the importance of black art, black lives, and black history in Canada, by way of workshops and performances.
Responsibilities
Montreal Steppers seek to hire a young individual, black or racialized, as a Community Arts Coordinator. The position entails the research, outreach and collaboration with arts organizations. The individual will gain experience and develop transferable skills on how to plan and execute projects and events. They will also experience the inner workings of the non-profit organization. There will be weekly one on one supervision and mentorship.
Based on the student's experience and expertise, we will collectively find opportunities for content development to improve our education and workshop programming in the schools. We encourage applicants to bring forward and conceptualize projects of interests and other ways in which you will bring your skills into the role.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Email communication
- Site visits to organizations
- Setting up of meetings
- Development of contact list/spreadsheet of organizations
- Booking and reserving of stepping workshops and performances
- Research and outreach to community organizations, theatres and summer camps regarding stepping workshops and courses.
- Content research
Assets and requirements
You must be a Concordia student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program through the fall 2026 term.
- Students who self-identify as Black will be prioritized for this role. Students not identifying as Black in Canada should have a good understanding of Black realities and allyship.
- Independent worker
- Strong verbal and written communication skills (significant communication on behalf of the organization)
- Bilingual if possible
- Interest and experiences in various forms of arts (dance, theatre, music, poetry, story-telling, videography) is an asset
Duration
September 8, 2026 - November 27, 2026 (12 weeks)
These dates could be negotiated between the intern and the host organization. Internships might be renewed for up to 3 terms if that is of interest to both the student and the host.
Location/site of employment
- Site of work: Remote
Note: Interns are invited to come work at SHIFT's co-working space (LB-145) between 10-4 throughout the work week.
Working style
Independence: This role offers a balance of independent work and guidance. Students will have opportunities to take ownership of their work while receiving support as they build confidence, develop new skills, and contribute to the organization's work.
Support: You'll have scheduled opportunities for guidance and feedback, with additional support available as needed.
Hours
120 hours total, 10 hours a week
Remuneration
$2,500
