INDI: How does youth participation unfold in a school context?
The 2019 “Fridays for Future” school strikes and demonstrations in Montreal and around the globe were a watershed moment for me. Witnessing the passion, engagement and participation of diverse youth energized my fascination with the concept of childhood, human rights and the ordinary, often overlooked and taken-for-granted within what is deemed a “universal” experience. How do children, in all their complexity and diversity, interpret and respond to social issues in their everyday lives, that is in Montreal at least, within a school environment? And how do we, as adults, support them along the way to build rights-respecting and resilient communities?
