Second Evening: Masterclass and Concert

Date: Wednesday, February 6
Time: 8 pm to 11 pm
Location: Centre des Musiciens du Monde, 5043, rue Saint-Dominique, Montreal, QC H2T 1V1
Special price for masterclass and concert: 50$

The masterclass will start at 6pm : open to intermediate and advanced strings players. Alicia will take workshop participants on a tour of the basic klezmer dance forms and melodic modes. They will learn traditional tunes and accompaniment patterns and discover the secrets of authentic Yiddish playing style – the rhythmic feel, timbres, slides, trills, and ornaments like the "krekhts" that make a violinist or fiddler sound like a bonafide klezmer! We will then take a masterclass approach and have one or more volunteers play a tune and work with Alicia on how to achieve a more authentic klezmer sound. 35$ for 1h30

The concert will start at 8pm: Fierce, profound, heart-wrenching, joyous! Klezmer fiddler Alicia Svigals is one of today’s leading proponents of the ecstatic and foot-stomping music of Jewish Eastern Europe and the new world. Soak up an authentic freylekh — the original term for hora, the circle dance as it’s performed at a real wedding or bas mitzvah. With ensemble on accordion, bass and drums: ALICIA SVIGALS, violin RACHEL LEMISCH, trombone MARK PEETSMA, double bass MELANIE BERGERON, accordion THIERRY ARSENAULT, percussion.  20$ at the door
