Position description

The Centre for Continuing Education at Concordia University provides part-time employment to a range of subject-matter experts to teach in short-target courses and programs. Teaching tasks include the preparation of course and course plan, delivery of course, evaluating student performance and grading student work and grade submission. Instructors attend departmental meetings and attend professional development training activities related to the program.

Course description and learning outcomes

In this course, you will teach students how to apply the fundamentals of graphic design to create documents with numerous pages and varying layouts using Adobe InDesign. You will guide them in the smooth integration of Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat, enabling students to create professional-quality page layouts.

Throughout the course, students will complete concrete projects, producing a variety of documents like magazine layouts, pamphlets, brochures, annual reports, and more. You’ll also introduce them to the digital realm, teaching how to create interactive publications for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Students will learn how to add interactivity, use screen-size reflow, embed audio and video, as well as design eBooks and interactive PDFs for web clients.

By the end of the course, students will be thoroughly prepared for future employment in the fast-paced world of graphic arts or advertising.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Learn how to integrate text, graphics, design, and page layout techniques to produce professional quality documents
  • Prepare complex multiple-page documents using style sheets
  • Understand how to work with layers to produce print documents including pamphlets, brochures, and magazine layouts
  • Use advanced typographic options
  • Learn basic pre-press notions to apply through the InDesign interface
  • Understand the different formats, screen sizes and requirements for mobile devices
  • Convert print publications to digital formats
  • Add interactivity to e-publications

Qualifications and assets:

  • Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Graphic Design or equivalent.
  • Industry Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in graphic design, with demonstrated expertise in Adobe Digital Graphics tools, particularly Adobe InDesign.
  • Teaching Experience: Minimum of 3 years of relevant teaching
