Description of host organization
The Indigenous Garden Project is an initiative of professor Louellyn White in the First Peoples Studies (FPST) program to cultivate an Indigenous garden at the Loyola campus. The garden will be a cultivated space focused on growing various plants including medicine plants, herbs, and vegetables. The garden will serve as a learning space for students, primarily in FPST, to engage with traditional ecological knowledge, to connect with the land, and to plant, tend, and harvest crops. This community project will hopefully result in an abundance of food sources that can help address food insecurity among Indigenous students across Concordia as well as FPST students.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with professor White and other stakeholders to plan and coordinate the project;
- Create learning opportunities for Indigenous students at the garden;
- Do community outreach, and recruit student volunteers for Summer 2026;
- Organize volunteering dates and tasks;
- Coordinate access to materials and supplies with other gardeners at Loyola;
- Serve as a liaison with the Otsenhákta Student Centre to help engage Indigenous students at the downtown campus and,
- Coordinate fundraising to support the sustainability of the garden.
Assets and requirements
- You must be a Concordia student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program through the summer 2026 term.
- Students who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis will be prioritized for this role. Students not identifying as Indigenous in Canada should have a good understanding of Indigenous realities and allyship.
- Interest or experience with gardening, sustainability and/or Indigenous ecological knowledge
- Strong organizational skills
- Good communication skills
- Interest in community engagement and/or volunteer engagement
- Must be comfortable working outside in various weather
Duration
May 11, 2026 – August 1, 2026 (12 weeks)
Note: Specific dates can be negotiated between the intern and the host organization.
Location/site of employment : Hybrid
Hybrid, two in-person locations :
- Sir-George-Williams (SGW Campus) : downtown Montréal
- Loyola Garden (LOY Campus) : 7141 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal, QC H4B 1R6
All interns are also welcome to join us at our co-working space at the SHIFT Centre (LB-145) throughout the work week.
Hours
120 hours total (~10 hours/week)
There is potential to renew the internship for up to 3 terms, provided you remain eligible and both host organization and intern wish to continue.
Remuneration
$2,500
Please note that SHIFT payments are made as honorariums issued in 2 installments: one at mid-semester, and the other at the end.
