Description of host organization

Mikana is an Indigenous non-profit organization founded in 2015, whose mission is to contribute to social change by raising awareness among diverse audiences about Indigenous realities and perspectives. We are a small, committed team actively working on the creation of educational tools, the implementation of awareness-raising activities, the support of Indigenous youth who build bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, as well as the development of partnerships that foster systemic change toward decolonization and indigenization.

Responsibilities

  • Communications & Content
    • Create visual content (videos, infographics, etc.) for social media and other channels using Canva and Adobe tools
    • Support the preparation of the annual report through documentation, writing, and layout assistance
    • Capture photos, videos, and notes at Mikana events for documentation and outreach purposes
  • Administrative & Organizational
    • Assist with the development and revision of internal documents, policies, and organizational resources
    • Review and update existing resource materials to ensure they reflect current practices and realities
    • Support updates to the website’s content structure and page organization (WordPress)
  • Events & Community Engagement
    • Monitor and identify events and opportunities where Mikana could participate or collaborate
    • Support the planning and coordination of Mikana’s in-person events
    • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of webinars and virtual gatherings
    • Assist with the preparation of materials used in workshops, presentations, and community activities
    • Support fundraising activities and initiatives that contribute to sustaining Mikana’s mission

Responsibilities may evolve depending on the intern’s interests, skills, and Mikana’s ongoing projects.

Assets and requirements

  • You must be a Concordia student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in communications, public relations, administration, or a related field through the summer 2026 term.
  • Students who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis will be prioritized for this role. Students not identifying as Indigenous in Canada should have a good understanding of Indigenous realities and allyship.
  • Functional oral, written and reading comprehension in both French and English. Knowledge of an Indigenous language is an asset
  • Genuine interest in Indigenous issues, non-profit work, or social justice. Experience gained through lived experience, community involvement, and/or professional work with Indigenous individuals, communities, or organizations is an asset;
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, etc.), Slack, Zoom and Canva Pro. Knowledge of Wordpress is an asset;
  • Collaborative team player who is also able to work independently and demonstrates initiative and adaptability in a dynamic, evolving work environment;
  • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks is an asset;
  • Curiosity, openness to learning, and interest in contributing to a small, mission-driven team.

Duration

May 11, 2026  –  August 7, 2026 (12 weeks)

Note: Specific dates can be negotiated between the intern and the host organization.

Location/site of employment : Hybrid

 

All interns are also welcome to join us at our co-working space at the SHIFT Centre (LB-145) throughout the work week.

Hours

180 hours total (~15 hours/week)

There is potential to renew the internship for up to 3 terms, provided you remain eligible and both host organization and intern wish to continue.

Remuneration

$3,750

Please note that SHIFT payments are made as honorariums issued in 2 installments: one at mid-semester, and the other at the end.
