Open work permits for spouses

Under certain conditions, your spouse/partner is eligible for an open work permit.

Eligibility requirements

Your spouse/partner is eligible for an open work permit if you are:

  • Studying in one of Concordia's master’s or doctoral programs
  • Studying in one of Concordia's undergraduate programs that grants a professional degree:
    • Bachelor of Engineering (BEng, BE, BASc)

How to apply

When applying for their work permit, your spouse or common-law partner must provide:

  1. Your valid letter of acceptance
  2. Your proof of enrolment
  3. Your transcripts from your current program
  4. Proof of the relationship, such as your marriage certificate, or, if you are common-law spouses having lived together for at least one year, the Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union

Your spouse can apply at the same time that you apply for your study permit or they can apply at a later time.

Note: If you are already in Canada and are applying to extend your spouse/partner's work permit, please note that the work permit cannot be extended if you are in your last term.
