All new students must have a Letter of Introduction to enter Canada

Many new students and their families are entering Canada without proper documentation!

As a new incoming international student, please do not travel to Canada until your study permit has been approved and you have received your letter of introduction. You should not enter Canada as a visitor when you intend to study.

Also, keep in mind that since you will be going through Canadian customs on your arrival, this may result in one or more of the following:

  • Your study permit application will be cancelled
  • You will be asked to return home
  • Or both

If you do not have your letter of introduction by the start of classes, consider deferring your studies to a later term (refer to your Offer of Admissions for instructions)

This information does not apply to individuals who can apply for and receive their study permit at the Port of Entry:

  • U.S. citizens
  • lawful permanent residents of the U.S.
  • residents of Greenland
  • residents of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon
