Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Brief Summary of eligibility

  • You must have fulfilled all degree requirements for a PhD degree between the timeline of September 15, 2021 through September 30, 2025 (inclusively).  Only in rare circumstances will a Banting PDF be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution or within the same research environment where they completed their PhD or to an applicant who is affiliated for more than six months with the proposed host institution.
  • Canadian and international candidates are eligible.

Internal selection process

The selection process consists of the following steps:

  • You must submit your Letter of Intent (LOI) to the associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies from your prospective faculty before the deadline of June 7, 2024:
  • LOIs will be reviewed and ranked (according to the Tri-Agency guidelines) at the faculty level. This process is overseen by each faculty’s respective associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies;
  • Each faculty will submit its ranked LOIs to the School of Graduate Studies;
  • The associate deans of Research and Graduate Studies, together with the associate dean of Graduate Student Academic Matters & Postdoctoral Studies, will convene to select the strongest candidates.
  • All applications will be reviewed by each faculty. However, only the most promising applications will be discussed during the adjudication committee meeting.
  • You will be notified by the end of July whether the university will endorse your application. This will allow enough time for you to complete your application with support from the university. We will use this period to finalize our institutional support for each application prior to the September 17, 2024 deadline.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the pre-selection process for the Banting competition, please contact the postdoctoral development coordinator.
