  • W - 18:00-20:15
  • EV1.615
  • INSTRUCTOR: KIM RONDEAU

This course will examine the diverse visual artistic practices by Black women, racialized and self-identifying, in North America. Students will discuss a variety of themes explored by Black women artists such as the body, resistance, empowerment, maternity, domesticity, slavery, gender and sexuality, activism and resilience, among others. This course will also study how these artistic practices have been largely ignored by art history. Additionally, we will focus on the specific intersections of experiences lived by Black women artists. Class activities and discussions will accompany lectures by the instructor and guest speakers. Readings will include texts by thinkers such as Audre Lorde, bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins as well as artists’ writings by Elizabeth Catlett, Faith Ringgold and Adrian Piper.
