Campus cook-off: Concordia chefs throw down

On March 24, students from the Grey Nuns Residence will take on a team from Loyola Campus in an Iron Chef-style competition

“We’re sure there are some chefs — some diamonds in the rough — out there,” says Joey Morabito, marketing manager of Aramark. “This is their time to shine.” “We’re sure there are some chefs — some diamonds in the rough — out there,” says Joey Morabito, marketing manager of Aramark. “This is their time to shine.”

Ladies and gentlemen, tie your aprons. It’s time for the second annual Concordia Iron Chef competition!

On Thursday, March 24, two teams of amateur student chefs will square off in the Buzz Dining Hall, on Concordia’s Loyola Campus. One team of six will represent the Grey Nuns Residence, while the other team will represent both Loyola residences: Hingston Hall and the Jesuit Residence.

Students interested in participating have until March 16 to sign up.

“We’ll pick names from a hat beforehand to make up the teams, then each teams gets a black box of the same ingredients,” says Joey Morabito, marketing manager of Aramark, Concordia’s food services provider. “Contestants are allowed to use their phones to find recipes. They get 40 minutes to cook and plate their dishes.”

Judges will include Daniel Poulin, executive chef of Aramark, as well as a representative from Residence Life. The prize is still to be determined.

“It’ll be fun to watch, and we encourage everyone to attend,” says Morabito. “The idea is to promote cooking, since both residences have food stations where students can prepare their own meals. We’re sure there are some chefs — some diamonds in the rough — out there. This is their time to shine.”

Concordia’s second annual Iron Chef competition is on Thursday, March 24, at the Buzz Dining Hall (7141 Sherbrooke St. W.), Loyola Campus, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Students can register to participate until March 16.
