Discover how the internships available with many of our programs give you the experience to succeed. Many of our internships are paid.

BA in Child Studies

Overview

The internship experience is required in the BA program in Child Studies.
Students may begin their internship in the final year of their studies.

Internship details

The internship lasts one semester and is worth 6 credits. 

Placement process

Students placements are monitored by the Program Director who organizes the placements in approved settings. Students can also choose their settings but must be approved by the Program Director and Course Instructor.

BA in Early Childhood Elementary Education

Overview

There are five required internship experiences in the BA in Early Childhood Elementary Education program.

Internship details

While there is some variability, the internships are typically completed as follows:

  • EDUC 294: Year 1 (Fall or Winter) - One day a week for one semester, 60 hours total
  • EDUC 297: Year 2 (Fall or Winter) - One half day a week for one semester, 40 hours total
  • EDUC 395: Year 4 (Fall) - Seven weeks full time
  • EDUC 493: Year 4 (Winter) - Seven weeks full time
  • EDUC 495: Year 4 (Winter) - Seven weeks full time

Placement process

All internships are arranged either by the course instructor (EDUC 294 and 297) or the Internship Coordinator (EDUC 395, 493, 495). Students are not permitted to find internships on their own.

B.Ed. in Teaching English as a Second Language

Overview

The internship experience is required for the B.Ed. in TESL program, and is designed to ensure that students gain diverse, hands-on experience with English language learners across age groups and settings.

Internship details

Students begin their practicum experiences in the first year of the program in a community-based adult ESL setting. The first-year adult practicum is embedded within a 6-credit methodology course for a total of 30 hours (3 hours per week over a 12-week term).

School-based internships are completed progressively from Year 2 onwards, alternating between elementary and secondary placements in the following courses: 

  • TESL 466 (Elementary, 3 credits): 120 hours
  • TESL 467 (Secondary, 3 credits): 120 hours
  • TESL 486 (Elementary, 6 credits): 240 hours
  • TESL 487 (Secondary, 6 credits): 240 hours

Placement process

All practicum placements are coordinated by the Department of Education. For the Year 1 practicum, students are placed in adult community centres that partner with Concordia.

For the school-based practica, placements are arranged in collaboration with local Francophone centres de service scolaires and private schools. Students do not arrange their own placements.

MA in Child Studies

Overview

The internship experience is optional for the MA program in Child Studies. Students choose between writing a thesis or completing an internship.   

The internship starts at the second year of the MA once the core courses have been completed. 

  1. Students will propose an issue to explore (i.e., child development, family relationships, teaching quality, curriculum development, service delivery);
  2. Complete the 200 hour internship;
  3. Write a comprehensive report of the internship experience.

Internship details

The internship experience is generally a year in duration totally 200 hours in five courses for 18 credits:

  • CHST 690 (3 credits): Internship Proposal
  • CHST 691 (3 credits): Internship Field Placement I
  • ‌CHST 692 (6 credits): Internship Field Placement II
  • ‌CHST 699 (6 credits): Internship Report

Placement process

Students are responsible for finding their own internship setting in consultation with their supervisor. Past students have worked in settings such as community agencies, childcare centres, schools, and hospitals.

MA in Educational Technology

Graduate diploma in Instructional Technology

Overview

The internship experience is optional for the Graduate Diploma in Instructional Technology.

Students may begin their internship they have completed all their core courses. However, we strongly recommend that students begin their internship once they have completed all the courses in the program.

Internship details

The internship experience is 140 hours in one 3 credit course (ETEC 690).

Placement process

Students will have assistance finding an internship with an approved list of employers. Students may also find an internship on their own, however, it must be approved.
