Awards and funding
The Department of Education offers several awards for entering and current undergraduate and graduate students.
For awards offered through an application process, the Department informs students well in advance so they have ample time to apply.
New funding available
Funding for the Graduate Diplomas in Teacher Certification (Teaching English as a Second Language and Preschool and Elementary Teaching) is available towards the cost of tuition and compulsory fees from the Ministry of Education. There are also travel funds for workshops for students from outside of Montreal in the initial cohorts.

Administration Management Society – John Crawford Award
This award is open to full-time Master's or Doctoral students in the Department of Education. It is adjudicated by the Department of Education on the basis of academic merit.

Allyson Kassie and Steven Goldberg Graduate Scholarship in Education Award
The scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time student registered in an M.A. or PhD program in the Department of Education. The award is to be granted through competition on the basis of academic excellence.

Andre Ward Award for Excellence in Teaching English as a Second Language
This award is granted the graduating student in the Teaching English as a Second Language program with the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA).

Andrew Murphy Graduate Award in Special Education
This award is open to full-time Master's or Doctoral students entering or currently registered in a program in the field of Special Education, specifically:
- MA Educational Technology,
- MA Educational Studies,
- MA Child Study, or
- PhD Education
Preference may be given to students who themselves have benefited from Special Education programs, and who continue to study in this field at the graduate level. The award is adjudicated and awarded through competition by the Department of Education on the basis of academic excellence.

Cheryl Mackenzie Memorial Bursary
The Bursary is intended to support and encourage students in financial need entering the MA in Educational Technology program. Applicants may be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or international students. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The Bursary shall be granted on the basis of financial need, by a selection process undertaken by the MA in Educational Technology Admissions Committee, to full-time or part-time students who are entering the program. Students applying for the Bursary may be required to complete a confidential needs assessment.

Dr. Gary Boyd Memorial Award
Awarded to a second-year M.A. student or a new Ph.D. applicant, the candidate’s research/project must demonstrate the application of cybernetics and systems theory, implicating a “global systems steering vision”.

Fondation Amal Scholarship
The Fondation Amal Scholarship shall be granted through competition, based on academic merit, among full-time students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts, Major in Child Studies with a Specialization in Exceptionality and Diversity in Childhood Settings as their area of concentration.
How to apply
Applicants should demonstrate community involvement or volunteerism, and provide two (2) reference letters to corroborate the involvement/volunteerism essay. All qualified students may apply, but preference will be given to a student with a chronic disease, disability or impairment.

Jean-Francois Towner Graduate Scholarship in Education
The award is to be granted through competition on the basis of academic excellence. Candidates must be a full-time student registered in the M.A. Educational Studies program.
This award replaced the George Springate Graduate Scholarship.

Mary Perri Graduate Scholarship in Educational Technology
The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and reward excellence in educational technology at the PhD level. Students will be chosen for academic excellence. Priority will be given to, but not limited to students studying Knowledge Transfer, Knowledge Management and/or Change Management with research focusing on the applications of educational technology in the workplace.
How to apply
Students must submit a statement of purpose of their work and their goals (500 words), unofficial transcript of all university studies, a current resume and one letter of recommendation from their research supervisor.

Nadia Gagliano Student Teaching Award
The Nadia Gagliano Student Teaching Award is intended to encourage and reward excellent students who will exemplify the characteristics that best describe Nadia Gagliano (1979-2002). Nadia was always willing to help others, provide support, and she was highly esteemed and respected by her peers.
The Nadia Gagliano Student Teaching Award will be granted through competition on the basis of academic excellence and written personal statements. It is open to all 4th-year full-time or part-time students in the Early Childhood and Elementary Education (ECEE) program.
Candidates will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Strong academic standing (a grade point average of 3.5 or higher);
- Involvement in community activities;
- Having professional qualities of being a team player, motivated, hardworking, dedicated to children and the profession of education;
- Demonstrating a professional attitude with strong interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrating personal qualities like being warm, energetic, positive and caring.

Sara Weinberg Award for Excellence in Teaching
Awarded each year to the graduating student who best exemplifies the qualities exhibited by Sara Weinberg (Director of the Early Childhood and Elementary Program and ECEE Internship Director 1984-2018).
The award is presented to a student who has demonstrated excellence across all five internships in the ECEE program, and who exemplifies Professor Weinberg’s many wonderful qualities, such as:
- Commitment to teaching, students, the broader school and educational community, and the overall teaching profession
- Warmth, caring, compassion, empathy
- Support for peers and colleagues
- Resourcefulness in the classroom and beyond
- Sense of humour
- Professionalism

William and Rosalind Knitter Award
The William and Rosalind Knitter award is intended to encourage and reward students currently enrolled in Concordia University’s Department of Education, and whose focus of study is the philosophy of pedagogy, with an emphasis on the work of John Dewey.
This award was established by an anonymous donor to honour William and Rosalind Knitter, both of whom were faculty members at Concordia University.
William Knitter was a Professor in the Department of Education from 1974 until 2008, former Chair of the Department and Vice-Dean of Administrative Affairs in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and is now Professor Emeritus. Active in the wider Concordia Community, he was also President of the Concordia University Faculty Association and is currently President of the Concordia University Pensioners’ Association.
Rosalind Knitter taught full-time in the Department of Management of the John Molson School of Business (JMSB) for over 20 years, specializing in strategic planning and business ethics. She was previously recognized by Maclean’s Magazine as one of Concordia’s outstanding teachers. Although retired, she continues to coach students in national and international case competitions.
