Why study Education?

Education offers numerous options for careers that makes meaningful contributions to society and to study the intersection of the humanities, social sciences, and applied sciences.

The societal impact of studying Education

So, why study Education in today's society? In short, Education is a rich, multidisciplinary field that prepares students for meaningful careers that serve society.

Studying Education is both practical and intellectually enriching. It prepares you for in-demand careers —from teaching to digital and workplace learning — at a time when Canada faces a teacher shortage and increasing demand for lifelong education.

Our programs equip you for these vital roles. At the same time, you’ll gain broad knowledge across the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Applied Sciences. For example:

  • Exploring the impact of technology in education applies research in fields like Computer Science, Educational Psychology, Management and Pedagogy.
  • Studying effective pedagogy and andragogy (strategies for teaching adults) involves equal parts theory and hands-on practice.

Our faculty represent this breadth of knowledge and experience, and bring that to their internationally recognized research

A variety of careers in education

Graduates of our undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs work as teachers, principals, curriculum specialists and educational leaders.

Graduates of our other programs work as instructional designers, pedagogical consultants, education policy specialists, educational researchers, higher education faculty, special education support personnel and daycare staff, among others.

Because Education also requires subject matter expertise, we also offer a variety of minors and certificates that undergraduate students can combine with majors in other disciplines to prepare them for roles that combine the subject matter expertise from their majors with Education.

Most of our programs offer internships and other field-based experiences to give students an opportunity to apply and reflect on theory learned in their courses into a classroom experience.

Practicing our values in the classroom and beyond

Most importantly, Education is rooted in the values of community and inclusivity as are our programs. Through our in-and beyond-the-classroom experiences, we encourage our students to build their own communities and support systems.

We have a formal and strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion to support all prospective and current students' belonging and inclusion in our programs and department.
