The AI Design Experience for Instructional and Informational Content

Summer Institute 2025: May 12 to May 15, 2025

About the summer institute

This four-day symposium and summer institute provides participants with an opportunity to design and develop instructional and informational content using AI tools. This experience is  organized around the ADDIE framework for developing materials: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Participants will explore the possibilities for AI in a particular activity area (such as design or evaluation) through presentations, and demonstrations.
  • Then, working in groups, participants complete a brief activity using the AI applications. This design activity is called a sprint, which is a time-constrained, five-phase process that helps teams rapidly solve problems and test ideas through prototyping and user feedback Design sprints, and experimental learning process,  are popular in product development, UX design, and innovation processes, allowing teams to quickly iterate and focus on learner-and user-centred solutions (Knapp, 2012).
  • After completing the sprint, participants receive feedback on their work.
  • Then they reflect on the experience of using AI to perform the task.
  • In addition, participants would workshop a draft of the book generated by the last summer institute when completing their work for this one.

Like last year’s Summer Institute, this one is intended to bring together students, other faculty, and practicing instructional designers and professional communicators, so groups would include a mix of students and practicing professionals and provide for rich interactions and learning across experience levels.
