About us
TeamMTL is an inter-disciplinary and inter-institutional collaborative composed of students and faculty members from McGill and Concordia. Participants come from various backgrounds including architecture, design, business, engineering, computational arts, communications, journalism and theatre.
We are also supported by well-equipped and internationally recognized research labs and centres specializing in team management and sustainable building research.
TeamMTL is the only Canadian team participating in the competition this year.
The competition
Originally launched by the U.S. Department of Energy in 2002, the 2018 Solar Decathlon will be held in Dezhou – the ‘Sun City’ of China.
Our mandate is to design and build a sustainable dwelling using renewable energy technologies, high-performance building strategies and innovative architectural design. We also aim to improve ecological awareness in addressing sustainable development.
Once we arrive, we will have 18 days to build our net-zero energy rowhouse followed by a 20 day exhibition and evaluation period. The jury will evaluate each entry’s cost feasibility, energy efficiency and environmental adaptability according to its performance in ten different contests. We will be competing against 21 other teams from 11 countries and 49 universities.
Why we need your help
We have been preparing for more than two years and it’s now time to fly to China! We need help securing transportation and accommodation for our team of 50 students, faculty members and professionals. We don’t want to leave any team members behind.
Our work in depth
TeamMTL’s design, the Deep-Performance Dwelling (DPD), is a Passive House-inspired, Net-Zero Energy capable and Low or Zero Carbon residential construction integrating comprehensive on-site resource management. “Deep-performance” suggests a socially, culturally, and technologically advanced architecture that embodies qualitative and quantitative notions of performance.
