Reducing poverty in Canada

Poverty is an issue deeply affecting communities across Canada. At our panel on Canada’s Poverty Reduction Strategy, we will host guest panelists from diverse backgrounds, including non-governmental organizations, research institutes, and politics.

The conversation will focus on the current strategy’s impact, and we hope attendees will leave the event with a greater understanding of and passion for anti-poverty work in Canada.

We will host four panelists from Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec to facilitate a group discussion.

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

The event will be sustainable and accessible — we will use the venue’s own kitchen space, dishware and reusable containers to produce as little waste as possible. Leftover food from the event will be donated to students in need.

Who we are

We are of a team of five students in the School of Community and Public Affairs at Concordia. We believe the subject of poverty in Canada is important and deserves more prominence and discussion.

Preparing this panel — a project for our Social Debates and Issues in Public Affairs and Public Policy class — helps us learn leadership, event planning and organizational skills.

Why we need your help

In exchange for their expertise and time, we would like to offer honorariums to our panelists and moderator, as well as cover their travel costs. We hope to host 80 attendees to the event, which means incurring expenses to rent the space as well as simple refreshments.

We are grateful to the Faculty of Arts and Science for their financial support, but it does not fully cover the costs of the event.

Please give generously to help us hold an engaging debate about one of the most important issues facing our communities.
