Application-based awards

This award was established in 2005 through the fundraising efforts of members and friends of the Colors of Concordia Team, which has had over 200 participants from 62 countries in Montréal’s annual Tour de l’Ile for several years. The guiding philosophy of the Colors of Concordia Team, and the Colors of Concordia Award, resides in promoting awareness, cooperation, cultural integration, and communication, and the bringing together of different cultural communities. As such, the purpose of this award is to encourage and reward a full-time or part-time student enrolled in a bachelor’s program at Concordia, who has demonstrated initiative in trying to unite people from different cultures (religious, ethnic, sovereign) and who remains committed to promoting cultural integration. 

Requirements

The Susan Levin-Woods Scholarship was established through the generosity of Mrs. Susan Levin-Woods, a graduate of Concordia University. This scholarship is awarded annually to a Canadian woman who has demonstrated excellence in her studies. Applicants must be pursuing an undergraduate degree in any area of study at Concordia University on a full-time or part-time basis while following a career path or bringing up a family. 

Requirements

These scholarships were created through several endowment funds established by numerous donors wishing to support Loyola College. Their donations became part of the Loyola Foundation shortly after its creation in 1973 to be used for objectives, activities and purposes that would foster and maintain the tradition and spirit of Loyola College. At its closure in 2003, the Loyola Foundation Inc. created a permanent endowment at Concordia University which will fund the Loyola Foundation Inc. Entrance Scholarship program, honour the generosity of its donors, carry on the tradition and spirit of Loyola College, and recognize the academic excellence and good character of Loyola High School graduates in perpetuity.

All applicants must be graduates of Loyola High School in Montreal and newly admitted to a Bachelor’s program at Concordia University for Fall 2026 on the basis of completion of CEGEP or equivalent.

This entrance award was established in 2014 through the generosity of the Queen of Angels Academy Foundation, in tribute to the Queen of Angels Academy which closed its doors in June 2014, and in acknowledgement of the superior education offered by the Academy since its inception. Founded in 1888 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Sainte-Anne as an all-girls Arts and Science high school, the Queen of Angels Academy provided academic excellence in a caring and structured environment while instilling the values of respect, honesty, integrity, caring and sharing.

The Garnet Key Entrance Award is intended to encourage and reward students pursuing an undergraduate degree program at the University, whose commitment and spirit towards community involvement and academic excellence reflect the values exemplified by Garnet Key Society. In addition to this, the purpose of the endowment is to raise awareness of the Garnet Key Society to students with the hopes that it will create further interest and garner greater competition for students entering the Garnet Key Society.  This award is in perpetuity.

The Laura Smyth Groening award for Indigenous Students was established by the generosity of Emily McDonald in memory of her mom Laura Smyth Groening (1949-2016). Laura was an associate professor in the Department of English and over the course of an accomplished career authored many books and inspired many students. She was a strong believer in social equity and of particular importance to her were the rights and welfare of indigenous peoples. The purpose of the scholarship is to support First Nations, Métis and Inuit students of Canada entering an undergraduate program at Concordia University.

The Janis Riven Family Scholarship was established in 2021 through the generosity of Janis Riven, a proud alumna and Adjunct Professor at John Molson School of Business, where she has been a member of the faculty for over 20 years. With a B. Comm from Concordia University, an MBA from University of British Columbia and a BCL and JD from McGill University, Janis Riven has dedicated her most recent life to consulting and teaching to help today’s organizations and future managers to enhance value to all stakeholders through adopting sustainable strategies and effective governance. Janis Riven wishes to provide greater opportunities to Indigenous students who wish to develop their business skills to provide effective leadership in their communities. This Entrance Scholarship is open to full-time Indigenous students in JMSB.

Requirements

The Back on Track Award is established to recognize and reward students who have demonstrated exceptional perseverance, resilience, and academic improvement after having previously been in failed academic standing. This award acknowledges the dedication and effort required to overcome academic challenges and pursue success. Applicants must have returned to good academic standing following being in failed standing, with successful completion of at least 12 credits and an AGPA of 2.0 or higher.

This scholarship was established in honour of Brian T. Counihan’s contributions to student life over his 25 years as the first Dean of Students of Concordia University. This scholarship is awarded based on scholastic achievement combined with outstanding contribution to student life. Please note: Students cannot directly apply for this award – candidates must be nominated by any Faculty or Staff member of the university community who is personally familiar with the student, their scholastic achievement, and their contribution to student life at Concordia University.

Requirements

The Mercer Bursaries in Actuarial Mathematics are intended to encourage undergraduate students with satisfactory academic standing that are currently enrolled in the Actuarial Mathematics program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Students applying for this bursary must undertake a formal and confidential process to demonstrate their financial need to the Financial Aid and Awards Office.

The Bursaries will be funded by the generosity of Mercer Canada Limited.

The Global News Scholars Award is granted through competition, based on academic merit, demonstrated academic excellence and involvement in causes within the Black community. The award is open to students in journalism, with preference to students who can demonstrate their involvment in causes within the Black community through a one-page statement.

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee made up of the Chair of the Journalism department or delegate, as Chair the selection committee, with two other members of the Journalism Department. The selection committee will review the applications and recommend the recipients to the Undergraduate Awards and Awards Committee (USAC) via Financial Aid and Awards (FAAO)

The Vincent, Olga and Denis Nicolas-Diniacopoulos Scholarships Program was created in 2000 through the generosity of the late Mrs. Olga Nicolas-Diniacopoulos.  Her son, the late Professor Denis Diniacopoulos, taught at Concordia University in the department of Communication Studies for over twenty years, until his retirement in 1996. 

These annual scholarships are intended to encourage excellent full-time students who are pursuing their undergraduate studies at Concordia University in a Major, Specialization, or Honours, in the areas of Classics, Communication Studies, Mathematics or Psychology. In addition, the purpose of these scholarships is to encourage students who express and can demonstrate an interest in interdisciplinary studies.

The Robert V. Tucker Memorial Award is intended to encourage and reward promising full-time students who have taken a non-traditional educational path to reach their current academic status.

Applicants must demonstrate the intention of pursuing a career in Actuarial Mathematics, a dedicated work ethic, and a willingness to help others in need

This essay competition scholarship for Undergraduate students was established in 2006 through the benevolence of Mr. Stephen Pariso, BA 2004, and Ms. Shauna Vineberg-Pariso.

La bourse in memoriam Kelly Oliel Award was created by the Département d’études françaises to honour the memory of former student Kelly Oliel, who passed away in July 2022 after a valiant battle with Ewing's sarcoma. The Award will assist an undergraduate student who, like Kelly, combines strong academic achievement with participation in Department and volunteer activities.

The Carlini-Deluca Undergraduate RISE Award -for Resilience In Science & Engineering Pathways to Success was established in recognition of remarkable undergraduate students in Science and Engineering, who are future focused and optimistic about their path to success despite navigating through personal strain and exceptional challenges.

The RGA Scholarship program aims to recognize outstanding University students, as well as assist in efforts to advance EDI in our communities which we live and work. The RGA Life Reinsurance Company of Canada Scholarship will help address some of the social and economic systemic inequities that continue to disadvantage and prevent Black, Indigenous, and LGTBQIA+ communities from accessing post-secondary education.

Recipients will be selected based on their academic programs that are in Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Business (Economics, BComm, and Computer Science, Actuarial Math, Actuarial Math & Finance, and Mathematical and Computational Finance) as well as their great work on promoting EDI within their community. Students must provide proof of their outstanding work on promoting EDI within their community.

Requirements

This scholarship was established in 2006 through the generosity of Dr. Ronald Calderisi. It is intended to encourage and reward undergraduate students currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Biochemistry program who have an assessment GPA of at least 3.30. Candidates for this award must have a declared interest in continuing their education in the field of medicine. 

Preference will be given to students who are from First Nations, Metis and Inuit communities. However, all eligible students are encouraged to apply.

This scholarship in Communication Studies was established in 2006 in memory of Nawaf Al-Rufaie, by his family. The Nawaf Al-Rufaie Al-Rufaie Scholarship in Communication Studies is intended to encourage and reward talented Communication Studies students at Concordia University who exemplify the characteristics of Nawaf Al-Rufaie, BA Communication Studies 2004.

The Christiane Thost Travel & Tuition Awards in Music aims to offset costs for tuition and travel for an undergraduate student enrolled in the Department of Music, in the Faculty of Fine Arts. The travel portion of the award is intended to help fund travel to a music festival, performance, or series of performances, special workshop, lessons, masterclass, or residency. The purpose of travel should be relevant to the student's course of study, research, performance or creative output. The award shall be granted through competition on the basis of outstanding academic achievement as assessed by the University, and personal statement, to full-time students in a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in music that have applied to the Department for course-related travel.

This award was established in 1995 by the Faculty of Fine Arts through the donations of colleagues and friends to honour the memories of Heather Walker and her daughter, Erin. An academic advisor in the Office of Student Affairs of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Heather Walker represented our best attitude toward students and both she and her daughter, Erin, were dedicated to humanitarian organizations such as Families for Children, Development and Peace and H.O.P.E.

Awarded annually to a full- or part-time student enrolled in a Bachelor of Fine Arts, selection is made by the Office of Student Affairs, Faculty of Fine Arts based on demonstration of humanitarian service while in the pursuit of excellence in academic, artistic, and community service or related endeavours.

Requirements

This scholarship was established in 1995 by the Faculty of Fine Arts through the donations of colleagues and friends. Heather Walker was an academic advisor in the Office of Student Affairs and she represented our best attitude toward students. She graduated with a BFA in Cinema in 1980, and obtained a second BFA in Photography in 1988. Heather pursued successful artistic activities in Photography and was dedicated to humanitarian organizations such as Families for Children, Development and Peace and H.O.P.E.

This scholarship is available to all full- or part-time students in Cinema. The recipient is selected by the Office of Student Affairs, Faculty of Fine Arts, on the basis of artistic and academic achievement, and on commitment to humanitarian activities.

The Ann Duncan Travel and Tuition Award At The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery is intended to help offset the cost of the recipient's full-time tuition and fees, and travel to a significant contemporary international event (as determined by the selection committee) bringing together artists from across the world such as Biennales, Triennales, or Documenta, held in various countries around the world. Art fairs of any kind such as Frieze, Miami, Cologne, Paris, and Basel are excluded from consideration for this award. The event must occur and the candidate's travel must be completed within the twelve month period immediately following their selection. The Ann Duncan Travel and Tuition Award At The Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery is open to second year Undergraduate students in Art History and Studio Arts, and shall alternate from year to year between these two areas.

For 2026-2027, the award is restricted to Art History candidates.

The Truax Award in Electroacoustic Music is supported by the Glenfraser Concordia Endowment, established in 2024 by Simon Fraser University Professor Emeritus Barry Truax and Dr. Guenther Krueger. The award is intended to provide financial support to one or more undergraduate or graduate students at Concordia University who have demonstrated excellence in electroacoustic music composition and research. 

Barry Truax is a Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, where he worked with R. Murray Schafer and the World Soundscape Project. He taught courses on sound, audio, and electroacoustic music for 40 years, and directed the Sonic Research Studio. As a composer, he is renowned for his PODX computer music system works and multi-channel soundscape compositions, with over 600 performances worldwide. Barry is a founding member of several organizations including the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music, the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and the Canadian Electroacoustic Community. He has authored books and articles spanning acoustic communication, soundscape analysis, electroacoustic composition, and acoustic ecology. 
The Award shall be granted through competition, on the basis of outstanding academic achievement and creative excellence in electroacoustic music composition and research, as assessed by the University.

This scholarship was established in 1999 in memory of Robert Daniel Ball, a student of Music at Concordia University. Robert Daniel Ball was a remarkable individual who never let his illness get him down; he always maintained a sense of self-worth and optimism.

This award was established by the family and friends of Gregory John Barker, BFA Music 2008 With Distinction, in his memory.  Gregory John Barker was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend to many. He embraced life fully with great cheerfulness, single-mindedness, resourcefulness, and rugged independence. He was never satisfied with the status quo but always moved forward to face new challenges and to seek new pathways. He stubbornly danced to his own drum, often ignoring traditional conventions. Fully bilingual, he was very sociable and engaged readily with people.

Established in 1990 in memory of the noted musician and teacher, Garnet Menger, this award is given annually to an outstanding student in any Department of Music program.  The award acknowledges and rewards accomplishment in academic, artistic, and student life activities.

Starting in 2023-2024, CIBC has donated to provide funds for EDI student scholarships for the John Molson School of Business.

The CIBC Scholarships at Concordia will further the strategy to support a more diverse student body and future workforce within specific areas of business studies.

The scholarships were established by Leon Sabbaghian (BCom’08) and Annie Kapraelian (BCom’10) are both graduates of Concordia University. They have established the scholarship to encourage and support students pursuing their education at the John Molson School of Business who are also involved in the Concordia Armenian Student’s Union (CASU).

Rothenberg Wealth Management is a leading Canadian-based independent and employee-owned investment firm with a legacy of over 37 years providing wealth advice, strategies, and solutions to thousands of individuals and families across Canada.

Requirements

This scholarship was established in 1983 to honour Magnus Flynn for his years of devotion to Sir George Williams University and Concordia University. This scholarship is awarded to a student in the John Molson School of Business with high academic standing, and who has made a strong contribution to student life.

These scholarships are available to full-time and part-time students in the John Molson School of Business in their second year or higher.

Mr. Richardson is a former CASA President, Concordia Senator, Valedictorian and Concordia Medal recipient, and continues to be involved in coaching the case competition program, providing future leaders the same mentorship he was fortunate to receive during his time at JMSB. This scholarship recognizes students who demonstrated outstanding impact and leadership by participating in case competitions during their undergraduate degree at JMSB.

The intent of the Donors is to support female students as they are underrepresented in the industry Applicants must provide a statement about why they are passionate about pursuing a career in real estate.

This statement may refer to volunteering with the Concordia Real Estate Club, recent work experience, internships or extracurricular activities.

The AEE Canada East Founders Scholarship for Undergraduates in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Innovation was established in 2023 by the founders of the Canada East chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers. The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage engineering students who are studying and have academic interest in energy, energy efficiency, renewable energy, decarbonization, smart cities, or innovation.

The Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science Student Life Award is intended to encourage and reward Undergraduate students currently enrolled full-time in the faculty, in the Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Computer Science programs.

The Award is created by Dr. M.N.S Swamy, the Honorary Concordia University Research Chair in Signal Processing and research professor at GCS. Dr. Swamy also notably served as the Founding Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering from 1970 to 1977, and as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science from 1977 to 1993. Dr. Swamy’s compassion towards Indigenous students and the struggles he has witnessed them face during his time completing his graduate studies in Saskatchewan has led to the creation of the Award. He wishes to encourage and support Indigenous people in their studies as students who are underrepresented at GCS.

This Award recognizes a full-time indigenous student upon entrance to GCS, in any engineering program.

The Dr. George D. Xistris Scholarship Endowment in Mechanical Engineering was created in 2023 by Kathryn Xistris (B.Comp.Sci. ’85) in honour of her father, Dr. George D. Xistris. Spanning a 30-year academic career at Concordia and the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, Dr. Xistris held varying roles where he most notably served as Associate Professor and researcher in Mechanical Engineering from 1968-1995 and Assistant Dean from 1973-1993. He was instrumental in establishing the Engineering Faculty by leading the first accreditation of Concordia University (previously known as Sir George Williams) Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering Program in 1969. He led the accreditation of the Building Engineering program in 1982 and Computer Engineering in 1983 and reaccreditation process until his retirement in 1993. 

As member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec for over 50 years, Dr. Xistris authored 33 scholarly and professional publications and journals on use of vibration as a maintenance tool, presented at 44 academic conferences on various aspects of random vibrations, supervised over a dozen masters theses throughout his career, and held many professional and scientific society memberships. The Scholarship will recognize an outstanding student pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science. Preference will be given to a student involved in the Greek community, supported by a written statement,

The purpose of the award is to empower women engineering students, foster student activities, promote innovative ideas in engineering and support the overall engineering community.

Genium360 is a network of services for engineering professionals in Quebec. Its mission is to connect the engineering community. With Genium360’s gift, they will help cultivate gender equity and an
innovative mindset among engineering students, support student activities, initiatives, and the engineering community as whole at the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science and beyond.

The Genium360 Awards for Women in Engineering in Student Groups shall be granted annually through competition on the basis of satisfactory academic achievement to a full-time female student enrolled in a course of study leading to a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Computer Science. Applicants must have proof of membership in a student group at GCS under the umbrella of the Engineering and Computer Science Student Association (ECA).
