Theatre facilities

Students work within dedicated creation and performance spaces on both campuses – and enjoy a full roster of professional equipment and technical support.

Studios & venues

Theatre facilities on the downtown (SGW) campus

  • Four acting studios with sprung floors and state-of-the-art projection and integrated sound and light systems
  • Two design classrooms as well as a Designer's Studio (GM)
  • Purpose-built costume shop (GM), purpose-built costume storage 

Theatre facilities on the Loyola campus

  • Scenic carpentry shop
  • Properties Shop
  • Set and props storage space

Performance venues

The Department of Theatre productions take place at several venues on campus, most notably, the Concordia Theatre (formerly DB Clarke Theatre), a fully equipped 380-seat proscenium theatre, one of Concordia's premier performing spaces.

We also host productions in our small black box studios and in off-campus venues.

Room booking policies

Student eligibility

  • Undergraduate theatre students are allotted 10 hours of room booking per semester.
  • You may book time for course-work during your undergraduate degree. Bookings are made on a first-come, first-served basis through the online booking system.
  • Online booking will be permitted after the second week of classes/ the DNE deadline, provided it is for curricular use.
  • You are not permitted to book rooms for another person.
  • Studios cannot be used for commercial gain.

  • Graduate students supervised by a Theatre faculty member may book time for research work during low-use periods, such as summer and winter breaks, subject to approval by the Chair.
  • Production rehearsals must be arranged through the Director of Performance Production, Jen Strahl or designate.
  • Studios cannot be used for commercial gain.

Request for exceptions to the above policy are viewed on a case-by-case basis. You must complete the Theatre Special Event Request Form and email it to theatre@concordia.ca, for consultation with the Department Chair.
 

The FC Smith ComplexOscar Peterson Concert Hall and Concordia Theatre (formerly called the D.B. Clarke Theatre) are available for external events scheduled on campus. Internal and external rental rates may apply. Rates vary for Internal Users, Preferred External Users and External Users.

Guidelines for space use

  • If you cannot attend your scheduled booking, please cancel at least one hour in advance.
  • All University safety guidelines and policies must be upheld. For a complete list, consult the Office of the Vice-President, Institutional Relations and Secretary General website.

  • Remove all outside footwear.
  • Return all furniture, props, and audiovisual equipment to their proper locations. Do not remove items from the room, including chairs, tables, mats, or remote controls.
  • Ensure extra furniture is returned and the room is left in its zero state.
  • Keep the space clean: remove all garbage, signs, and tape.
  • Food and drink are not permitted in studios, with the sole exception of water bottles.
