Concordia’s FOFA Gallery, in collaboration with artist Bonnie Baxter's advanced woodcut students from the Print Media program, assisted by graduate students from the department of Art Education, will be hosting a one-day live public printing event and exhibition on Saturday, November 18, 2017, from 10 to 5 p.m.

The group show and visual performance will be orchestrated by Big Ink, an American-based collective that offers artists the opportunity to produce large scale woodcuts on a giant mobile printing press. This public event (held in the light-filled atrium of the EV Building on St-Catherine Street and Guy) will explore the collaborative and democratic potential of the time-honoured medium of woodcut, frequently coupled with contemporary technologies such as laser engraving, as emerging printmakers engage with audiences outside the studio and gallery.

A communal woodcut will be made available to anyone who wishes to join the artists as they explore the dynamic interplay between the technology, the public, and the printed image itself. Surface Inc. brings attention to the act of printing and the moment when ink and message incorporate onto the surface. The large black and white prints produced will be exhibited in the atrium until November 26th.

La Galerie FOFA de l’Université Concordia, en collaboration avec les étudiants de niveau avancé du cours de gravure sur bois donné par l’artiste Bonnie Baxter dans le cadre du programme des médias d’impression, accueillera un événement unique sur les pratiques de l’imprimé le samedi 18 novembre 2017, de 10h à 17h.

Cette exposition et performance visuelle collective seront co-réalisées par Big Ink, un collectif américain qui met à la disposition des artistes une imprimerie mobile géante, leur offrant ainsi la possibilité de produire des gravures sur bois de grande échelle. Il s’agit d’une rare occasion de témoigner de l'interaction dynamique entre la technologie d’imprimerie, le public, l'artiste et l'image imprimée elle-même.L’atelier, tenu dans l'atrium du pavillon EV, rue Sainte-Catherine et Guy, sera donné par les étudiants graveurs et assisté par des étudiants de deuxième cycle du département d’éducation artistique. Cet événement sera l’occasion d’explorer le potentiel collaboratif et démocratique de cette pratique, couramment associée aux techniques de pointe telle que la gravure laser, alors que des artistes graveurs émergents interagiront avec le public en dehors de leur studio et de la galerie.

Une matrice sera mise à la disposition de tous ceux qui souhaitent collaborer avec les artistes afin d’explorer les possibilités qu’offrent l'image imprimée. Surface Inc. attire notre regard vers l'acte d'impression et le moment où l'encre et le message s’unissent à la surface. Les estampes noir et blanc de grands formats seront exposées dans l'atrium jusqu'au 26 novembre.
