The Henry Habib Diplomacy Accelerator

Established in 2026, the Henry Habib Diplomacy Accelerator is a pioneering program designed to prepare the next generation of diplomats and diplomacy professionals. By emphasizing applied diplomacy, the Accelerator addresses today’s global challenges while equipping participants with the skills and experience needed to contribute meaningfully to Canada’s diplomatic efforts.

Seven pillars of the Diplomacy Accelerator

Built around seven complementary pillars, it brings together a unique combination of strengths that set it apart in the field:

Undergraduate Awareness will serve as a stepping stone to graduate studies and potential careers in diplomacy.

The Public-Servant-in-Residence has benefited students of the Master of Arts in Public Policy and Public Administration program (MPPPA) since 2019. The program engages a prominent public servant to spend ten to twelve hours weekly with undergraduate and graduate students to provide real-world education and insight into diplomacy.

The Diplomat-in-Residence will engage a prominent current or former diplomat to spend ten to twelve hours weekly with undergraduate and graduate students exposing them to the practical side of the conduct of diplomacy as well as provide professional development and mentorship opportunities.

Graduate student support is the most important determining factor in a high-performing candidate’s choice of where to study. Funding packages at the PhD and master’s level support the most promising students who aspire to a career in applied diplomacy.

The Henry Habib Speaker Series on Applied Diplomacy will feature speakers who provide insights into the inner workings of diplomacy. This event will welcome Concordia students and faculty as well as scholars from other institutions and the community at large. It will showcase the Accelerator’s expertise and offer exceptional opportunities for engagement.

Upcoming event: An evening with Kenneth Deer, LLD 15

The Concordia University Summer Institute in Applied Diplomacy, in partnership with International Political Science Association (IPSA), debuted in 2021, making it the first-ever IPSA-Concordia Summer Institute in Applied Diplomacy. The 10-day program offers policy-oriented seminars and a hands-on diplomacy lab that allow participants to work on case studies in teams. Participants network with Montreal’s vibrant community of ambassadors and global-affairs leaders from nearby Ottawa.

Mentorship and internship opportunities for Diplomacy Accelerator fellows. Concordia’s MPPPA program enjoys close relationships with federal agencies, which facilitate the placement of interns from the program — many of whom are bridged into professional positions after graduation. The Accelerator will ensure our students continue to access high-quality internship opportunities in federal, provincial and municipal government, as well as at international and non-profit organizations.

Henry Habib: A legacy of excellence

The Accelerator’s namesake is Henry Habib, an outstanding teacher and a highly respected scholar who has been a full professor of Political Science since 1975.

He founded the Department of Political Science at Loyola College in 1961, prior to Loyola’s merger with Sir George Williams University as Concordia University in 1974. Habib became Chair of the Department of Political Science at Concordia University in 1982 and held that role until 1998. At present, he is a Governor Emeritus of the university’s Board of Governors.

Habib began his academic career at the American University of Beirut, then went on to become a respected authority on the politics of the Middle East. He was a visiting professor in Islamic Studies at McGill University and the University of Ottawa.

He inspired multiple generations, never hesitating to engage fully with students, mentoring them to success in academic and professional careers. Habib is remarkable among academics because he did not hesitate to step far beyond the campus to introduce students to experiences in the Middle East that were, and remain to this day, life-changing lessons that brought academic theory face-to-face with reality in the field.
