Funded Post-Doctoral Fellowship

Aircraft Systems Laboratory-Dr. S. Liscouët-Hanke

Development of MDAO framework for hybrid-electric aircraft

A fully funded position for a Post-Doctoral fellow (PDF) for up to 3 years is open, starting in January 2023, in the Aircraft Systems Lab. The PDF will play a key role in a collaborative project (called EAP) between Concordia University, University of Sherbrooke, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Bombardier, Pratt & Whitney and Calogy Solutions.

Background

Technology optimization must integrate various disciplines, which a trend to use multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO) frameworks. In particular, for hydrogen-powered aircraft and/or hybrid-electric aircraft, the interrelationships between the various disciplines (propulsion, performance, thermal management or subsystem design) are crucial to developing feasible aircraft concepts and system architectures. MDAO is even more complex with various companies since the interfaces and processes between companies must be understood with the current limitations and be integrated into a single environment or process.

The PDF will help to achieve the following objectives:

  • Develop a framework to link processes between entities (aircraft sizing/performance, aircraft subsystems, thermal management)
  • Explore multi-level simulation/analysis consistency (steady steady-state per flight phase vs. high-level dynamic modelling)
  • Integrate with other aircraft systems, such as the electrical power system, flight control systems or the environmental control system

The PDF will collaborate and coordinate with all project partners and participate in the supervision of research students.

Required Qualifications

  • Completed PhD in aerospace engineering or equivalent; knowledge in aircraft and systems design
  • Experience with MDAO and programming
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills; willingness to act as an integrator between several industrial and academic partners
  • Excellent academic writing skills

How to apply

Qualified candidates can send their application per email to susan.liscouet-hanke@concordia.ca using the subject "PDF – EAP" with the following elements:

  • Email with your motivation and relevant experience
  • A complete and up-to-date CV (indicate any leave or circumstanced to be considered)
  • Transcripts and proof of PhD degree (or status on PhD – must be completed by Dec 2022)
  • Recent publication
  • Reference letter from PhD supervisor

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

We are committed to creating an inclusive research environment in the Aircraft Systems Lab. Applications from all qualified candidates are encouraged, particularly from underrepresented groups, such as women, visible minorities, Indigenous persons, sexual minorities, persons with disabilities, and others who may contribute to diversification; candidates are invited to self-identify in their application.
