The new Concordia University Alumni Association held its first official members’ meeting on August 19. More than 80 alumni attended the gathering at the Henry F. Hall Building of the Sir George Williams Campus.

The meeting centered on approving by-laws and the election of 20 directors. In a closed board of directors meeting that followed, the newly elected board members appointed Philippe Pourreaux, BComm 00, as the association’s president.

Since the merger in 1974, there have been three different alumni associations affiliated with Concordia: the former Concordia University Alumni Association, the Loyola Alumni Association and the Association of Alumni of Sir George Williams University.

The three groups came together during a special general meeting in May and voted unanimously to amalgamate.

The first agenda focused on electing the board of directors, ratifying all acts of the provisional directors and confirming by-laws of the organization. In addition, an accountant was appointed and an update on upcoming Homecoming 2014 events was provided.

Leisha LeCouvie, Concordia’s new senior director of Alumni Relations, led the presentation and highlighted the exciting Homecoming events. She also emphasized the importance of community and applauded the coming together of the alumni associations. “One of the greatest things about this university is that it has such great community,” said LeCouvie.

She also noted the remarkable turnout for the event, with graduates from Loyola College, Sir George Williams University and more recent alumni showing up to participate.

“I’m so encouraged by the number of young graduates in this room,” she said.

The meeting was followed by a reception where alumni were invited to network and sample refreshments.
