The SARC is excited to host a Week of Wellness and Self-Care from November 28-December 2. Part of supporting survivors and their allies in the community is through offering space and resources for self-care. We are collaborating with a variety of departments and organizations on campus to highlight the different offerings available to Concordia community members that encourage self-care to reduce stress and increase wellness. Knowing numbers of attendees helps us plan, so register if you can. However, drop ins are also welcome.

Gentle Creative Movement and Meditation with the Recovery and Wellness Community Centre & Sexual Assault Resource Centre.

This workshop will begin with movement for expressing creativtiy and end with a grounding meditation. No previous experience needed, all are welcome. The entire workshop can be done seated in a chair or standing. Option to bring a yoga mat or towel if you'd like to sit on the floor during the meditation, a few will be available on site for use.

Creative Movement:

Connect with your body and mind through gentle creative movement. With the use of stretching, joint mobilization, and imagery to inspire creative expression, this workshop will offer space for grounding and connecting with the body. There will be the choice to share movements to create a phrase of choreography as a group or to explore individually. A variety of movement options will be provided and participants are encouraged to engage only as feels comfortable.

Meditation:

Meditators will be guided through a soothing and awareness-driven body scan (also known as Yoga Nidra) with the intention of connecting to all aspects of their bodies; harmonizing mind, body, and soul. Participants will be guided to use breath, visualization, and focus techniques to encourage relaxation and increased awareness of the present moment. Meditators will then be given the opportunity to visualize a serene, safe space within their minds; allowing for the possibility to connect with different emotions, thoughts, or sensations that may emerge through this process.

This event is open to all types of meditators whether you are more experienced or have never meditated before. This space will be completely confidential, with honour and respect for all participants.

Please note that movement and mediation can bring up powerful physical and mental experiences that may not always be pleasant. In the case that the experience becomes overwhelming participants are free to leave the space no questions asked. There is also space to share moments of your experience with the group or guide once the meditation has been completed. A peer-support volunteer will be available to offer support in the SARC drop-in space throughout the workshop.
