Honours in Economics

The BA Honours in Economics is a 60-credit program designed for students aiming for graduate studies. It emphasizes strong mathematical, analytical, and writing skills, and signals academic excellence to employers and admissions committees. Students receive advanced training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, with flexibility to choose electives.

While the program does not include a thesis, students are encouraged to engage in research opportunities at Concordia and Bank of Canada Governor’s Challenge. Students are also invited to reach out to their Economics professors to inquire about mentorship opportunities in preparation for their graduate studies.

Application process

To enter the Honours program, students must apply for an internal concentration change after their admission to Concordia into the Major or Specialization in Economics (or another relevant concentration). Students are encouraged to meet with an Economics advisor in their first year. Applications are due by April 30 and must meet the eligibility criteria. For help with the application, contact Ms. Melissa Faisal.

Once the application is sent, the department advisor will recommend applicants to the Faculty of Arts and Science Honours Committee, which will make the final decision. Students will be notified by email with program details and course planning instructions.

Eligibility requirements

  • 30 Concordia credits on record in the student's current program (this does not include transfer credits)
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 (B+) and assessment GPA of 3.30 (B+), overall and in ECON courses
  • No grade lower than a C in any course taken at Concordia
  • The completed 'Change of concentration' form, available from the Undergraduate Program Assistant by request

Maintaining Honours status

  • Maintain an Assessment GPA of at least 3.30 in the Honours concentration (overall and in all ECON courses).
  • Earn grades of C or above in all courses, including non-ECON courses. (C- is not acceptable.)
  • Complete all degree requirements required by the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Department of Economics.
  • Achieve a minimum Cumulative/Graduation GPA of at least 3.30 in order to graduate with Honours.

Students who fail to meet Honours requirements will be transferred to the Specialization in Economics after biannual assessments. It is the student’s responsibility to stay on track with Honours requirements. For guidance, students are encouraged to meet with the Undergraduate Program Director and utilize available resources.
