Funding
Conference and travel
Conference travel funding is available from multiple sources and can be combined. Eligibility depends on the number of active terms in your program.
Departmental Funding for PhD Students
Registered graduate students can receive a travel allowance from the Department of Economics for presenting their research at major scholarly conferences. The maximum funding for conferences is $200 per conference, within the first 15 terms in the PhD program.
External funding
Explore external funding opportunities, including those offered by provincial and federal government agencies, to support your studies.
Assistantships
Teaching assistanships (TA)
The Department offers teaching assistantships (TA) to all full-time PhD students, subject to an annual review of each student’s funding package.
In addition, qualified graduate students may be appointed as tutorial or lab leaders for selected core courses, such as introductory and intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics. These tutorial and lab assignments are determined during the regular TA assessment process, and the stipend for tutorial/lab leadership is equivalent to that of other TA responsibilities.
Research assistantships (RA)
Research assistantships (RA) also provide funding opportunities for doctoral students. RA funding levels vary and are typically discussed with a student’s supervisor, particularly once the student reaches the thesis-writing stage.
