Graduate admission standards

The Department of Economics offers a limited number of spots in its graduate programs, and the Graduate Program Committee sets academic standards above the University's minimum requirements. All applicants must meet language proficiency standards. Applicants are not required to secure a supervisor prior to admission and GRE scores are optional. The application fee cannot be waived.

Admission standards

MA and Diploma programs

  • Candidates with a minimum 3.0 GPA (on a 4.3 scale) may apply to the MA program, but only those with strong records in core Economic theory courses (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics and Econometrics) will be considered.
  • Applicants not admitted to the MA will automatically be considered for the diploma program, with no additional application required.
  • Candidates lacking depth in core areas may need to complete up to 12 credits in 500-level courses (e.g., ECON 501, 503, 521) as Graduate Diploma students before advancing to the MA program.
  • A minimum B+ grade in core courses is required to progress from the Diploma to the MA.

PhD program

  • PhD applicants typically need a minimum 3.5 GPA (4.3 scale) at the MA level, with a solid “A” standing (GPA of 4.0) in core courses (micro theory, macro theory, and econometrics). They must also demonstrate independent research ability, such as through a strong MA paper. While GRE scores are not required, high scores, especially in the Quantitative section, may strengthen the application.
  • Candidates with an exceptional background may apply directly to the PhD program without completing an MA. The department offers financial assistance to top applicants, excluding those with external scholarships.
