An interdisciplinary formation in communication and media

Our MA program is one of the most prestigious and competitive programs in North America. We provide our students with interdisciplinary training in communication theory and media research methods including research-creation (practice-led research).

Our program typically spans two years and offers four study options for both full-time and part-time students.

Our students are highly motivated with a diverse range of research and creative interests, from gender expressions on TikTok to disinformation in games and streaming platforms. We measure the success of our program by the contributions and impact of our graduates. Many of our alumni are professionals in media and cultural industries: digital media, film, television, gaming, radio and the arts. Others continue their studies in doctoral programs in Canada or abroad.

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Three letters of reference and assessment forms
  • Applicants whose primary language is not English, are required to submit official language test scores, unless exempted.
  • A writing sample (e.g. a research paper or essay from a senior undergraduate course)
  • Transcripts for all post-secondary institutions attended
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship (if applicable)

Your application also includes a statement of purpose (5 pages, double-spaced) with the following:

  • A brief overview of your undergraduate studies and what courses, professors or scholarly works were the most influential and/or the most challenging
  • A brief overview of the type of research (thesis or project) you would like to undertake
  • A selection of courses in our program which are of interest to you and professors you feel might support your research interests
  • A description of work experience (paid or voluntary) that is relevant to your application
