ARTH 271 Intro to Canadian Art: Art in Canada in a Global Context
- Instructor: Dr. Anne Whitelaw
This course will introduce students to visual and material cultural practices in Canada from the mid-19th century to the present. Working from the assumption that art is not made in a vacuum, we will be exploring the flow of artists/makers and traditions as they have come into this territory and how they move outwards into the world. Traditionally, “Canadian art history” has been motivated by a desire to identify a “national” style, largely associated with the Group of Seven and the landscape. While the legacy of these artists continues to inform the work of artists in this country, there are many other practices, media and traditions that are core to the diversity of art and material practices of artists in Canada over the last 150 years.
