Join us for a conversation with Annie Gérin, the new Dean of Concordia's Faculty of Fine Arts, and Cheryl Sim, the Managing Director and Curator at Fondation Phi pour l’art contemporain.

Annie Gérin
Dean of Concordia's Faculty of Fine Arts
Professor, scholar and accomplished administrator, Annie Gérin began her term as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts on August 1, 2020.
She has a track record in senior academic leadership roles and in university governance, and is committed to respect-based dialogue and decolonization. Fluent in English, French and Russian, Gérin holds a PhD in the History of Art and Cultural Studies from the University of Leeds, a Master of Art History from York University and a BA in art history from the Université de Montréal.
She has published extensively and is well known for her research in Canadian and Soviet art in the 20th and 21st centuries, with a special interest in art as experienced by non-specialized publics outside of gallery spaces.
Gérin was a member of the editorial team at RACAR (Revue d’art canadienne / Canadian Art Review), the scholarly journal of the Universities Art Association of Canada (UAAC) from 2012 to 2014, and assumed the role of editor-in-chief from 2014 to 2019. She was awarded the 2019 Recognition Award from the UAAC in honour of her exceptional contributions and dedicated service to the association and demonstrated unwavering commitment to its professional ideals.
Cheryl Sim, MA 07
Managing Director and Curator at Phi Foundation for Contemporary Art
Stimulated by politically and conceptually engaged works across a variety of forms and genres, Cheryl Sim's current curatorial research interests include the diaspora condition, screen theory, political economy, clothing as a marker of identity and the use of music in contemporary art.
Recent exhibitions include GROWING FREEDOM by Yoko Ono and the group show RELATIONS: Diaspora and Painting. Sim is also a media artist whose practice incorporates her background in media studies and research on post-colonial strategies in contemporary art practice. Her video and installation work has been presented in exhibitions and festivals in North America and Europe.
In 2015 she completed a PhD in the études et pratiques des arts program at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQÀM). Her book “Wearing the Cheongsam: Dress and Culture in a Chinese Diaspora” launched in September of 2019 on Bloomsbury Academic.
As a musician and singer, Cheryl has produced five CDs as a solo artist and with the electronic group Gazelle and now endeavours to bring her music practice into her artwork as much as possible.
