Artists and cultural organizations have long been advocates for freedom of expression, arguing “the requirement that works of film, video, and other media arts be approved before the public is allowed access to them can rarely, if ever, be justified.” (Excerpt from the Independent Media Arts Alliance statement of principle against censorship)

This roundtable will look at the recent instance of the film Of the North which raised many questions about cultural representation, and the ethics around production and dissemination of a work that perpetuates negative stereotypes of a marginalized people.

This discussion will investigate the arguments that have surfaced in recent weeks to gain a better understanding of the impact that it has had both in the North and South.

The goal of this roundtable is to uncover the many important questions that have surfaced in a spirit of openness and mutual understanding.

Simultaneous interpretation will be available.
