Integrated paths initiative to facilitate faster grad studies at Concordia

Students can complete grad-level courses during their undergrad degree, saving time and money

Starting this fall, Concordia undergraduate students in select programs will have a new option for how to approach a future graduate degree.

The new integrated paths initiative, administered by the School of Graduate Studies, allows accepted undergrads to get a head start on graduate-level courses during their undergraduate studies. Replacing undergrad courses, rather than adding to courseload, these dual-credit courses count toward the completion of both degrees at once.

The result is a shorter path to finishing graduate studies, saving students money and getting them into their careers sooner, says Faye Diamantoudi, dean of graduate studies.

“The integrated paths initiative is an important step toward offering our students innovative and competitive options. It offers a chance for accelerated academic and professional growth, as well as a more seamless transition into graduate studies at Concordia.”

Students interested in starting an integrated path can apply during their undergraduate studies. The programs each have a unique application form, which will be reviewed by the relevant department.

While completing an integrated path makes the change into graduate studies smoother, admission into an integrated path doesn’t guarantee acceptance into a graduate program, as students still have to follow the standard application and admission process.

To provide as much flexibility as possible, students are not required to complete an integrated path if their plans change. There is no formal opt-out process; students can simply decide to stop registering for the graduate-level courses related to their integrated path.

Currently, twelve programs at Concordia offer integrated paths, covering a wide range of disciplines like Art History, Finance, Marketing, Accountancy, and Mechanical, Industrial and Aerospace Engineering.

More integrated path offerings from areas across the university are being developed and will continue to roll out over time.
