Fall 2020 Undergraduate Orientation
Dr. Ashutosh Bagchi, BCEE Department Chair
Dear new and returning students,
Welcome to a new academic year 2020-2021 and to our Department! We thank you for trusting us with your program of studies. As you know, we are all dealing with the current pandemic situation which is continuously evolving, I count on your adaptability and resilience in this time.
Specific COVID-19 procedures have been gathered here by the University and are updated on an ongoing basis. Please monitor this link frequently. Also for more targeted information, please monitor this page on our own BCEE website frequently.
I am sure you will have a rewarding time in the coming months. Although we are mostly going to meet/interact with you virtually, it is important that we remain connected on an ongoing basis.
We have set up many different resources to assist you in navigating online. Here are a few important steps we recommend you take to get you started:
1- Online Communication Tools // Two (2) accounts to set up.
-If not already done, please create your @concordia email. The procedure can be found here: https://www.concordia.ca/it/services/office-365-education.html. If your professor uses the Teams environment, you will need this to login. Our orientation session for first year students will also take place on Teams or Zoom. In order for us to grant you permission to access our presentations, you will need to have set this up. This external link may guide you with installing this program on our Concordia platform. It is the same procedure for our Faculty.
-Note that this is different than your @encs.concordia.ca account. You must set up both. The second one, is what gets you on our Engineering mailing lists, on which you will receive important information from our Program Directors and Advisor/Assistants, example regarding awards, etc. It will also be where you will receive information on possible TAships. This 2nd email address (@encs.concordia.ca) will also be your login information for our lab software. Please visit this link to know how to set this up. Note that at this time, since you cannot “pick up” your account on location in person, you will need to email firstname.lastname@example.org, stating that you wish to pick up your “encs account”; they will guide you remotely.
Both are equally important to set up at your earliest convenience. You can also use the “mail forwarding” features in all these email accounts to forward messages to your personal email account that you regularly monitor, to make sure you do not miss any important messages from Concordia/department.
2- Fall 2020 Undergraduate Orientation Session // You will have two (2) orientation sessions.
-A global one from the University already took place on September 1, for which information can be found by clicking here: Orientation. Though it has past, information will be online for 90 days; and,
-A local BCEE Department one, which will be held on September 18 (information to come shortly directly for our Undergraduate Program Director).
Both will be held virtually and both contain different information. We recommend that you attend each event.
3- Your individual help needs re: registration/advising questions // Since there is no physical reception desk to help triage your requests, a special procedure is presently in place.
All staff are currently working remotely. Given that the registration period is a rush period for everyone in BCEE every semester, we have tried to come up with an efficient system to help you formulate your questions and to keep providing you with the best and quickest registration assistance possible.
MOST student requests MUST first be made through a Student Request form. If you instead send a direct email to the Assistants, your query may be redirected to this form.
From that form, your request will be shared with the appropriate person (note that you will hear the name Ms. Elnaz Aghdami or Ms. Deborah Walker a lot) and you will receive a reply by email within approximately two (2) business days.
If you need to follow up on your form entry because you have not heard back from anyone yet, please email email@example.com and not the Assistants directly. This will help us focus on serving everyone we must serve before the DNE deadline.
