Term: This is a part-time position from May to August, 2024, with a possibility of extension

Hours: 2-3 days/week. The Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 11 am - 6pm

Salary: $17.75 / hour

Gallery attendants are the first face gallery patrons see as they enter our doors. In addition to establishing a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and providing easy access to information, attendants play an important administrative role by assisting with a variety of tasks. Gallery attendants are critical members on our small team. 

Students from the Faculty of Fine Arts are encouraged to apply, although those from related fields or with applicable experience/interest will also be considered.

Duties and responsibilities

Receiving the public

  • Greeting all visitors and offering information on exhibitions and programs. Answering a wide range of general questions from visitors, in person, by phone and email.

Administrative and communications support

  • Working with gallery staff on various administrative and communications duties such as filing, record updating, preparing invitations and social media posts, and assisting with gallery events.

Maintaining reception and gallery

  • Receiving and forwarding calls to staff
  • Maintaining lobby/reception tidiness, keeping area organized and arranging and replenishing public information and literature displays
  • Tidying and spot-cleaning front entrance and other public areas as required
  •  Tracking attendance

Securing the gallery and its contents by

  • Monitoring exhibition areas. Advising visitors of gallery regulations when necessary (i.e. no food and drink, accessibility info)
  • Communicating security issues to supervisor
  • Opening and closing procedures 

Working Conditions

  • Part time flexible hours (~2 days/week) as well as occasional evenings and some weekends to meet schedule of public hours, programs and special events
  • Some light lifting, painting, room set-up and take down may be required
  • Friendly, open, creative atmosphere

Required Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Good spoken English and French, strong writing in at least one of the two languages. Knowledge of another language would also be an asset.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • The ability to manage multiple tasks with regular interruptions
  • Previous experience or knowledge of the arts is preferred
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel and Microsoft Outlook and/or other web-based, design, and promotional tools (Mailchimp, Adobe, social media platforms, Canva, etc.)

Students will gain significant experience working within the cultural field and as part of a dynamic and public-facing fine arts space. Opportunities to participate in everything from communications, social media, arts administration and educational programming will be negotiated based on the skills and interests of the student.

The FOFA Gallery is located on unceded Indigenous lands, and we recognize the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation as the custodians of the lands and waters we now call Montreal. Tiohtià:ke/Montréal is historically known as a gathering place for many First Nations. Today, it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples.
