Join us for a conversation and Q&A with Edward Greenspon, President & CEO of the Public Policy Forum (PPF), and Sean Speer, PPF Scotiabank Fellow in Strategic Competitiveness.
As co-authors of The Urgent Case for a Supply Rebuild: Investing in a New Economic Compact for Canada, Greenspon and Speer argue that it’s time to become ambitious builders again, as Canada was in the two decades following the Second World War. The authors acknowledge this will be an enormous task, akin to the expansion of rural electrification in the 1930s and 1940s or the overlapping 1950s and 1960s construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway, Trans-Canada Highway and TransCanada Pipeline.
Edward Greenspon
President & CEO, Public Policy Forum (PPF)
Edward Greenspon has worked at the intersection of journalism and public policy for more than 30 years.
Before joining Public Policy Forum (PPF) — a national applied policy think tank founded in the 1980s — in 2016, Ed was a journalist with The Globe and Mail, Bloomberg News and newspapers in Western Canada. He is also the author of two books on Canadian politics and policy.
At PPF, Ed has headed up research and convening projects on the state of the news industry, what to do about online hate and disinformation, the social and economic determinants of growth and competitiveness, ensuring full and fair participation in the future of work and getting climate and energy policy working together – among other subjects.
Ed is the author of Double Vision: The Inside Story of the Liberals in Power, which won the 1996 Douglas Purvis Award for best public policy book, and of Searching for Certainty: Inside the New Canadian Mindset. He is a winner of PPF’s Hyman Solomon Award for Excellence in Public Policy Journalism. He currently sits on the boards of the Toronto Foundation and the Michener Awards Foundation. He holds a combined honours degree in journalism and political science from Carleton University and has a master’s degree from the London School of Economics, where he was a Commonwealth scholar.
Sean Speer’s latest research explores the perceptions and realities shaping the Urban-Rural divide in Canada, and the implications for policymakers and leaders. He is also an assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He previously served as a senior economic adviser to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
