"The Mushroom King has you already on trial! The Great Moderator has already taken you up in their huge hand and turned you slowly under their twinkling eyes. And the future-dead with their Dog Heads are already here to carry out the sentence and spend their coupons. Pan-pan, for youze all gathered here, is a grimoire, yes, but it is also, before it’s too late, A WARNING!"
– Simon O’ Sullivan, The Pan-Pan Myth-System (or Psychosis as Method), 2021.

pan-pan (Punctum Books, 2021) is a theory-fictional novel that treats the ‘modern’ and the ‘medieval’ as mutually generative worlds rather than sequential stages of history. Through a methodology of atemporal immersion, the book relays tales from the messy, poly-temporal ‘middles’ where these worlds overlap and cross-contaminate. Ultimately, pan-pan pilgrimizes a neomedieval pancosmia wherein every entity (including the book itself) must negotiate its ever-mutating selfhood within a hyper-economy of viral agency and perpetual contagion. On your pilgrimage through the pan-pancosmia, you will:

  • Witness: a polyresin rooster and $50 gift card existing as a perpetually unfulfilled transaction on trial for murder
  • Wonder: at the REXALL drugstore as a pharma-sitic entity living in symbiosis with the gut-brain of RÉSO’s underground food courts
  • Give generously: as the water feature of an Ottawa mall gives explosive birth to a Kinder Surprise paradigm-plague
  • Wish-list your parents: as commodities review user-generated Amazon purchase reviews from their own epistemicidal perspective

And, yes, alive to the world since 2021, the pan-pan grimoire will demonstrate its capabilities for reading and writing itself. Questions may be posted into pan-pan through CoN’s patent-pending hagioscope.

This is a hybrid event. Join in person or via Zoom.

About the Confraternity

Confraternity of Neoflagellants (CoN) was founded in 2009 by Serjeant-At-Law Norman Hogg and Keeper of the Wardrobe Neil Mulholland. Bound by immaculately tanned chirograph, CoN is constituted by pilgrim-objects dedicated to the ludic, ascetic, aesthetic and athletic sampling and propagation of live neomedieval contagions. Their patent pending fictioning combines with gym-ripped mythopoesis to work on your core beliefs. Not arm day, not leg day, not head day, but gut day, every day. As an army of prosthetic members, they flagellate the difficult middles. Mall walk with us.

Dr. Norman Hogg is an artist, writer and alumnus of the Humanities PhD Program, hosted within the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture at Concordia University, Montreal.

Prof. Neil Mulholland is an artist, writer and Chair of Contemporary Art Practice & Theory at The University of Edinburgh and Director of the MA Contemporary Art Theory, Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland.
