The Recovery and Wellness Community Centre (RAWCC) welcomes special guest Jess West to lead this virtual workshop on addiction and recovery, and how we can understand them through theory.

In this workshop, Jess will discuss addiction and recovery through the works of three great theorists: Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers and Ivan Pavlov. We'll begin by talking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs and the concept of addiction stemming from unmet needs throughout the early years.

Next we'll discuss Rogers' theory of self actualization and conceptualize bringing one's current self image to one that is more congruent with one's ideal self.

Lastly, we will discuss the famous theory of "Pavlov's Dog" and the methods used to rewire and reprogram our brains to respond to triggers in a way that feels healthier, as well as how we come to respond to triggers to begin with.

About Jess
After struggling with addiction for 17 years and many attempts to change her course, Jess West finally began her sobriety journey in September of 2019. Jess lives on a hobby farm with her husband and children, raising chickens, goats and 7 rescue parrots while battling with multiple sclerosis. A passion for youth outreach and harm reduction, Jess' latest project is running a drop-in centre for rural youth in the community.
