Four strategic logics have historically been particularly important in anti-capitalist struggles: smashing, taming, resisting and escaping. Even though in practice these strategies intermingle, each of them constitutes a distinct way of responding to the harms of capitalism. We will begin by examining each of these in turn and then look at various ways in which they can be combined. I will then argue that a particular way of combining these strategies – which I will refer to as eroding capitalism – offers the most plausible strategic vision for transcending capitalism in the 21st century.
