Undergraduate programs

The Department of Applied Human Sciences offers three undergraduate degree programs and two certificates.

The undergraduate degree programs provide a solid university education which builds a foundation for advanced studies. Our learning approach stresses real-life experiences with people, both inside and outside the classroom. As such, each of our undergraduate degree programs include internships or fieldwork outside the university.

Human Relations

Bachelor of Arts

Become an agent for social change. Whether you want to build strong teams in the corporate world or organize at a grassroots level, our Human Relations program gives you the tools to become a next-generation leader and change maker. This program offers optional concentrations that can be selected after successful completion of your first term.

Recreation and Leisure Studies

Bachelor of Arts

In a culture that values productivity and work, recreation plays a key role in maintaining a healthy work­­–life balance. When you study Recreation and Leisure Studies, you learn administrative and programming skills that help you develop leisure programs for all ages.

Therapeutic Recreation

Bachelor of Arts

As a therapeutic recreation specialist, you assess individual leisure needs in order to design specialized programs for individuals with physical, social, intellectual, or emotional disabilities. This hands-on program is a solid credential toward leading community groups and having a positive impact on peoples’ lives.

Family Life Education

Certificate

Whether you are qualified in your own profession and wish to obtain additional training or are a mature student who is considering going to university for the first time, the certificate in family life education builds competencies in group leadership and small group dynamics; interpersonal relations and communications; and designing, facilitating and evaluating programs and workshops.

The aim is to increase knowledge and skills relevant to conducting family life education programs in social service agencies, hospitals, schools, companies and faith-based organizations that support individuals and families across the life cycle.

Community and Organizational Leadership

Certificate

Designed for those who are qualified in their own professions and wish to obtain additional training and practice in the social services sector or are mature students contemplating entering university for the first time. Acquire the knowledge and skills that help bring about effective change in organizations and communities that improves the quality of life for those living and working in them.

This certificate can be completed with an emphasis in Community Intervention, Health Promotion or Organizational Leadership.
