Zero Waste Event Services Assistant

 

Position Details

Start date: September 2, 2025
End date: April 30, 2026 (possibility of extension)
Required Hours: 15-20 hrs per week
Wage $20/hr
Primary work location: SGW-H-734 (In-person)

Goal of the position

Support the Reuse Programming and Sustainability Specialist and the Creative Reuse Team in implementing waste reduction initiatives on both campuses by revitalizing our event ware and dish lending project. A special focus this term will be relaunching and promoting the Dish Project. The incumbent will coordinate the service of washing, sorting, and lending reusable mugs and dishes to on-campus events.

This role will also provide minor support to event organizers to achieve Sustainable Event Certification.

Task Descriptions

  • Receive and prepare orders of reusable dishware and equipment for events
  • Wash, count and reshelve dishware and equipment once returned
  • Coordinate delivery and pick-up of dishware and equipment and dishware to events on campus 
  • Collaborate with Sustainability Ambassadors or volunteers
  • Offer support for event organizers to meet the Sustainable Event Certification requirements
  • Promote reuse initiatives to students, faculty, staff and admin
  • Other duties in service of the Creative Reuse team

Required Skills

  • Have strong oral and written English communication skills

  • Have outstanding interpersonal skills to develop positive relationships with users 

  • Aptitude to work in a service-oriented environment as both a member of a team and independently

  • Strong planning, organizing, decision-making and problem-solving skills

  • Ability to multitask and work under pressure

Working conditions and physical environment 

The incumbent works primarily in a dish lending depot with medium levels of physical exertion required. They may be required to deliver or pick up materials using a trolley.

Time Commitment

Students will work 15-20 hrs/week.

The weekly schedule will be developed based on the successful applicant’s school semester schedule. However, schedules must be fixed and fall within traditional business hours (9 a.m – 6 p.m.).  

An example schedule may look like:
Monday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. (4hrs);
Tuesday 1 – 6 p.m. (5 hrs);
Wednesday 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. (3 hrs);
Thursday1 – 6 p.m. (5 hrs);
Friday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (3 hrs)

Student Gains

This position will provide students with unique experiential learning opportunities and foster experiences beyond the classroom, in the field of sustainability. Students will develop experience in customer service, event support, product inventory, and project management. They will gain experience working both independently and as part of a team.
