New initiative to help Concordia undergrads from outside Quebec learn French

Concordia undergraduate students from outside Quebec can now benefit from a newly launched initiative to help them develop and practice their French-language skills. OUI Can Help! brings together courses, activities, resources and support from across the university so out-of-province and international students can find options that match their interests and goals.

Students can explore learning pathways, standardized testing, activities and events on the OUI Can Help! website and visit the Oui Can Help! team during drop-in hours, on the sixth floor of the Hall Building.

“Learning French can look different for everyone,” says Maria Trigueiro, manager of the Bureau de la valorisation du français. “We’re excited to meet students, share what’s coming up and help them find resources and activities that fit their interests and goals.”

A part of student life

The initiative makes it easy for students to incorporate learning French into their academic experience, Trigueiro says.

Students can join a homeroom pod to learn French alongside others who are new to the language or looking to build their skills. The pods offer a space to practice and connect with other students throughout the semester.

The Student Success Centre will also offer activities designed to help students hone their skills in everyday settings. Examples include casual conversations and social activities where students can learn at their own pace and build their confidence outside the classroom.

Recognition of French skills

For students with prior knowledge of French, Skills Check can help take things to the next level. Undergraduate students from outside Quebec with basic French reading comprehension skills may be able to take the Test d’évaluation du français (TEF) at no cost.

It is a great opportunity for students to have their skills officially recognized, Trigueiro explains.

“Whether students are exploring French for the first time, or brushing up on their knowledge, they can find opportunities through OUI Can Help!” she says.

Throughout September, OUI Can Help! representatives will be at events and activities for new students across campus. Students are also invited to drop by the OUI Can Help! office on the sixth floor of the Hall Building (H-645), Sir George Williams Campus.
