Using Microsoft Copilot Chat at Concordia

October 6, 2026
|

Microsoft Copilot Chat is a generative AI assistant that is available to all Concordia faculty, staff and students through their university Microsoft 365 account.

Like other GenAI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude, Copilot Chat can help you create and refine content, summarize information, generate ideas, answer questions and support your day-to-day work and your studies.

What makes Copilot Chat different

When you are signed into your Concordia account, your prompts and responses are protected by Microsoft's enterprise data protection and are not used to train foundation AI models. This is a level of privacy and protection that free, consumer AI tools don't offer. Make sure you're signed in with your Concordia account to benefit from this protection.

When using Copilot Chat, always follow Concordia's policies and guidelines, including those related to information security, privacy, and academic integrity. Instructors should also refer to Concordia's guidelines for using generative AI in teaching and learning. Extreme caution must be used when handling any sensitive personal information.

What can Copilot Chat help with?

Copilot Chat can be used to:

  • Draft emails, reports, presentations and other documents
  • Summarize articles, policies, meeting notes and research materials
  • Generate ideas for teaching, learning, research and projects, where permitted by your course syllabus, or your instructor or supervisor's instructions
  • Improve content for clarity, tone and readability
  • Brainstorm, plan and solve problems

As with any generative AI tool, review and verify AI-generated content before using it. Responses may contain inaccuracies, omissions or content that requires additional fact-checking.

Copilot Chat vs. M365 Copilot

All Concordians have access to Copilot Chat, the web-based version of Copilot. It is an AI assistant that works with the information you provide in the chat, along with web search, to support your studies and work.

You may also hear about M365 Copilot, a separate, fully-integrated version that can access your Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and other Microsoft 365 applications. This version requires an additional licence.

Other GenAI tools

Concordia does not provide licences for tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. Individual use for productivity and experimentation is permitted, provided it also complies with Concordia's policies and guidelines.
